I was going to make a separate thread about this but may as well post here since this thread in general doesn't seem that popular. So here goes...
To all the people that have lived in Santiago. How's the pollution?
Upon checking the internet for travel dangers - the number one danger appears to be the infamous 'smog' especially in winter. |

I am coming to Santiago this summer to start the IDELT certification class @ Bridge in August. I am super excited.
I have asked around about the smog/pollution situation. I hear it is worse in their Winter time, but that, yes...it is a problem sometimes, but it's not really that bad. You shouldn't worry too much.
I intend on trying to find as many private tutoring opportunities as possible, as everyone seems to be in agreement that you need to do so in order to make ends meet.
I cannot wait to be there already! |

RE smog in Santiago: It is bad. Health wise I don't think it is something to be worried about if you are there for less than 5 or 10 years. As for aesthetics it makes some days a little ugly. However in the summer there are plenty of smog free days, and after it rains (winter) the views are crystal clear. I lived in an apartment with a rooftop view of the Andes and I loved to go look at them nearly every day so I am more concerned with the aesthetic perspective. I would say that Santiago and surrounding area has lots of natural (and unnatural) beauty and that the smog only corrupts that beauty about a third of the time. There is a visible difference in the smog from day to day and season to season. I ran and hiked in Santiago and surroundings and never noticed any difference in my breathing or overall health (and I have asthma). Again it is probably just an aesthetic problem more than anything. |
