Being a newcomer and trying to find my first job in ESL (in China, preferably), I wanted to make sure I wasn't going to get scr*wed over. I have been offered two different jobs, one in Taiwan, one in China, from two different recruiters. Now, i've read that recruiters are unnecessary and as a general rule more harmful than anything.

So, what I am considering is working up a good list of schools to check out on my own. Does anyone know of any good schools to apply to? I have no degree, but some volunteer teaching experience.

Thanks!! Very Happy

Yes, there are good schools I know of, but any good school requires at least a degree. The sort of places that don't ask for one usually need recruiters to get staff.
Try getting a CELTA; this will give you a chance maybe at elementary school level.

okay... how about schools that don't require: a) a degree and b) a recruiting agency?

...I would follow your advice and get the certification, but i'm afraid there is a money issue in the way (i'm not planning on doing this for the money. it's for the experience, but i have a tight budget where I am, and detest debts)

Then you're pretty much restricted to recruiters. They'll find you a job alright, probably in a primary or secondary school somewhere in the provinces. Rhonda - a well-known poster here - went down that road, and seems happy. Others don't have the same luck.
You can post a resume here for free see above]. Check out the sites on the sticky at the top of this board.

I am starting to believe that most recruiter get a bad rap just for the heck of it around here. While I agree with the fact that they're just a middle man, I have a hrad time conceding that they should be avoided all the time.

I came here using a recruiter and I have been extra happy with the way he's treated my wife and I. We are still dealing with him and he calls regularly to check on us.

I know another bloke in Tianjin than came using a recruiter and they have nothing bad to say.

If you're a first timer, it might be better to deal with a recruiter in my opinion

That is certainly possible, nolefan. I only know what I know from what I've read. The difference may just be the person with whom you're dealing, and not the company (like everything else, I suppose...)

With whom did you work?
