|
|
For a 26-year-old adult student interested in working in 'international business' ... whatever that may mean! She is low / intermediate level student work with on a 1-1 basis and Id like to follow the structure of a textbook.
Any recommendations? I have never used a business English coursebook before. I like the look of Market Leader ... anything else out there?
(Have looked on the business english forum but it doesnt seem very active - search hasnt worked for me either) |

When I saw this topic title I was going to recommend AGAINST Market Leader. I don't think it's very good, especially for a low/intermediate learner. Too many idioms and too much slang for people who don't know the basics. |

I looked at this book via a free sample of one chapter in PDF form. I thought it looked good, had a variety of activities and appeared relevant. However, it seems hard to buy in China as the student book is on a few websites at around 600 RMB / £60 / $80!
Any suggestions for what is good John?
I should add, I mean she is lower intermediate / intermediate. (I didnt mean low to intermediate) |

I've never seen a mass-market ESL book that I thought was "good", some are just less bad than others. I have a couple of textbooks that I've found over the years, "Grammar Drills in English" and the like; has things like syntax and verb tenses, lots of multiple choice stuff. |

There are a series of quite useful, thinnish, bookS: Telephone English, Email English, Socialising English, Negotiations English etc.. They are green in colour and are nice little books and you can piece together a course on those. |

I like 'The Business' published by Macmillan. It runs from pre-int to advanced. |

I prefer the 'In Company' series. I think the content is rather more interesting than 'Market Leader'.

The Business is the business.
Also, I like New International Express. Has a practical division of skills related to travelling, socialising, as well as doing business. |

Business Objectives. It's quite old, so you can probably download it and the audio file. Great book. |

I've just started using Lifestyle. Strictly speaking it's a general English book, but there's a huge emphasis on work life, and most of the communicative activities are based around business. It's a bit of a lighter alternative to a dedicated business book, which as others have said, can be a bit dense with irrelevant jargon.
I quite liked Market Leader when I used it though. |
