Thank you everyone for your input. Much appreciated.
I'll address a few things that were raised:
1) I've lived and worked in Asia with bipolar for five years including a stint in Taiwan, so moving to China won't be a complete culture shock. Provided I get the right medication, I should be OK.
2) The recruiter has informed me the college will provide accident and medical insurance which is great.
3) I have a close friend in Taiwan who is bilingual, I will get him to call around a few medical centers in Wuhan and find out if I can access this medication and will it be confidential. If I can't I'll do as you guys suggested and organize it to be sent with prescription from overseas.
4) Yes, I intend not to declare my condition. I was denied a job in Korea because I declared it, so I'm not going down that road.
Thanks again everyone! |
Good luck and best not to say anything to anybody who might be able to screw you over. What do I mean? That other TEFL-er you met from the school who invites you for a few beers after work might actually be a back-stabber who resents you or sees you as a threat, and when you confide about your situation to your "new" friend, they run off to the school admin trying to throw you under the proverbial bus.
The less said, better. |

| I am still not getting what the word means. Sorry OP for taking a curve on your thread. You seem to have an answer though. |

In China they don't like people taking prescription meds long term for many disorders. Yours is one of the disorders they would frown upon having you getting a visa in the first place and also make it difficult to get a prescription.
These were the conditions in Shanghai when I worked in a hospital for, so I imagine second and third tier cities would be even more difficult. |

Thanks.
Problem solved. Parents will mail the meds.
Didn't have to lie on medical form for visa last week which was good. The form only asked if i had suffered from psychosis. |

But how do you know they will arrive? Your parents will have to write the contents on a declaration form, no matter how they send it, and even if they lie, packages can be screened, opened and denied if the medication is not approved for China.
I have a very close relative who is bipolar and i know it doesn't take long off his meds for bad effects to show up. Please have a back-up plan in case the package is not delivered. I've know people who this has happened too, trying to get meds send from New Zealand and Europe, although with less serious conditions.
Maybe one of these places can give more information.

The first list has a number for the Red Cross. I'd trust what they say. |

| Thanks. Valid point. a few people have sent me private messages saying it works for them mailing it including one from New Zealand. I'll bring an extra month with me and check out a few hospitals too when I'm there. |

| As for "declaring" your condition, don't. You don't need to mention it on any forms, |
Just be aware of and prepared for questions on the chinese medical check form , after you come here. My form , as one of many questions, asked 'do you have any mental disease? Y/N'.
Obviously this is irrelevant to the actual physical check (X ray, ECG, blood etc), and, as others have said, your condition does not need to be mentioned. |
