Given the 2 recent bombings, they may actually be enforcing what these req's they posted on August 29, 2013 on their Canadian site:

| When I came back to China in April 2013 I travelled with a friend who was visiting for 3 weeks on an L visa. His first visa application was suspended until he provided return airline ticket confirmation and a full travel itinerary for his stay. This was an application made in London, by a UK passport holder. |

I had to provide proof of onward flight tickets and at least the first night's hotel accommodation when I got an L visa in Thailand once a coon's age ago. The onward ticket requirement seems to be becoming more and more omnipresent for visa applications for most Asian countries which in China's case is inconvenient if you want to fly in and travel out overland through Vietnam or Laos for example. The hotel bookings thing is straight up dumdumness...I guess they're just covering their bases against deadbeat, brokeass backpackers sitting around Dali and Lijiang for months playing didgeridoos all day, annoying people with Bob Marley on their iphones, man! and Noam Chomsky quotes about how evil America is, man!. Them or terrorist bombers - but I think the former.
Likely only hilena will know the real answer. |

So, restrictions cost money before they are in place?
I am actually curious about this, as I have a relative coming to visit. Should a copy of my gov docs suffice? |

Same here, although I told them I hadn't confirmed my departure date. I did book a hostel for a night but since I plan to stay for a month, they wanted to see a longer duration booking. (I'm actually planning to stay with a friend but don't want to put him through the paper work unless I have to -(invitation letter + scanned ID etc).
WARNING: If you (claim you've) overstayed like I did for one day, it'll slow down processing by as much as a week!!! I was surprised to hear they actually want a detailed explanation and a statement to the effect "I will not overstay in China!"
Whaddya think? Should I repeatedly copy and paste the sentence in English and Chinese a few hundred times and set it as a light grey background texture? |

I also didnt want the extra paperwork ... my friend was pretty much staying with me. So the hostel just wrote an email which we printed. The email was just a booking confirmation for the dates that fitted his schedule. Its just a paperwork exercise I think. |
