Immigrants from Taiwan vie for political clout

Chinese lobbyists learning tactics from well-seasoned Taiwanese

By Cindy Chang and Gary Scott , Staff Writers

Article Published: Saturday, May 08, 2004 - 8:25:49 PM PST

ROSEMEAD -- As the Taiwanese presidential campaign heated up in the
early months of this year, a well-seasoned army of Taiwanese-American
lobbyists did their usual thing, circulating petitions and knocking on
the doors of members of Congress.

The focus this time was on a national defense referendum that would be
decided by Taiwanese voters on the same day as the presidential
election, with the lobbyists promoting the measure to San Gabriel
Valley politicians as a triumphant display of Taiwan's young democracy
at work....

How ironic it is that Taiwanese in the US can not only promote a political candidate publicly. The can even become one.
Here in Taiwan any non-Chinese who dares so much as to even speak at a political gathering will be arrested, fined and deported.

What a cleverly nuanced position you have there, Aristotle, giving us "Yes" and "No" to choose from. That really allows for a wide range of options, and a great deal of precision, in describing the complex social phenomenon of racism in Taiwan. A very useful and informative poll. I'm glad I took the time to read and respond to it.

The number of foreigners here is negligible. I doubt that many among them are looking for political clout. I could be wrong, however.

I assume when you say foreigners you mean white people, a common misconception.
Estimates puts the number of foreign residents on Taiwan at about a half a million and increasing.

It's not a misconception at all. It's an observation. I don't see many Southeast Asians posting here about their shoddy treatment. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't this board set up for foreigners teaching English here? I see what your point is but I question its relevance on this board.

The fact is that you can't see anyone who post here. A large segment of the ESL teaching community on Taiwan is in fact of Asian origin and many of those post on this board.
There are countless threads about non- white teachers being treated badly documented on this site and many others.
I might suggest you expand your observation abilities as well as your perceptions of foreign English teachers on Taiwan.

I agree with you that the Government of the Republic of China openly and blatantly discriminates against persons of South East Asian origin however that discrimination is extended to all those deemed not Chinese and more recently Taiwanese by the the racist government of the Republic of China.
Good luck,
A.

I see. I can't see them, but you can. That explains everything. My guess is that the majority on this board aren't of Asian origin. My next guess is there aren't many laborers posting here either. Go ahead and contradict me, since you CAN see the people posting here.

Can someone name a country that is NOT racist?

Dont get me wrong, I am not the one to defend Taiwan, I pretty much hate it here right now. I just think they are more up front with their racism than other societies.

Any society or nation where different cultures and races mix is going to have racial tendencies. That is human nature and not easily overcome.
When the democratically elected government of a nation openly and blatantly enacts racist laws and regulations biased against any particular group then that nation is racist by definition.
There is however another major flaw in the original poster's questions.
Taiwan is by definition not a nation or society. It is in fact the leaglly recognised name for an island that is governed by the Republic of China.
