A poster claims that there are lots of teaching jobs in KSA paying $10,000 (= SR37.500) a month, plus other benefits (eg housing, tickets, medical, education)
Agreed ? |

To be fair he said '8,000-10,000 USD a month and other benefits'.....so maybe you could modify your poll. |

Dear scot47,
Please be sure to post copies of that flood of e-mails of those contracts. Inquiring minds want to know.
Regards,
John |

We had one poster here who got an offer of direct hire from ARAMCO at the top of that scale plus housing on THE compound. (with an MA plus extensive related experience) I've seen ads for contractor hire there that said US$7K per month, but you had to pay for your own housing out of that.
The ARAMCO compound International School pays at the top of this scale - and rumored even more.
So that suggests that we have a few highly qualified teachers getting this sort of money. Perhaps some of the military contracts?

Anyone putting yes of this poll that is actually earning 10,000 plus benefits please state specifically where you are getting that kind of salary. Not, I heard from a friend of a brother etc. but you are actually making that. I just came from there and the best I had heard of was some Aramco contractors, but that was do it all yourselves so cash outright and no benefits. I'd like to hear where it is happening as an ESL teacher. |

Maybe most ESL teachers are not making that kind of money, but there are English teachers working for universities in KSA that are close to the numbers stated. Native-speakers of English working as official members of faculty (teaching, for example, "Intro to English Lit") for the university that are not assigned any prep-year classes. |

Maybe most are not making that?? I think it is very safe to say that for sure the vast majority are not...
I believe that Scot47 is referring to the members of this board... as ESL/EFL teachers with normal credentials... Not English department professors who would naturally get more.
Another of the high payers is KAUST and it pays (or had paid) its handful of TEFLers at the top of this scale... and I did see a scanned copy of their contracts from one of their first teachers. At that time they had exactly two. We haven't heard from anyone who has taught there since.

(BTW... I didn't vote on the poll - even though the obvious answer is that "yes" there are some) |

I'm not going to go public on my salary as a contracted teacher to Aramco. What I will say is that on arrival my salary was just under 3 times more than a contact of mine who has worked at KFUPM for over 5 years with similar qualifications.
Oh and we get reasonable annual payrises while they don't...
Nuffsed. |

I think it would have been more useful to set the poll with salary ranges. Or to estimate the percentage of TEFLers who get X salary. The word "some" is too vague.
It is rather irrelevant what one or two or three posters say that they or a friend or acquaintance gets.
Based on ads, the experience of friends, and posters here, I would say that only perhaps 5% of TEFL teachers get US$8-10K a month.
Does that sound right?

I posted no because I don't but I'm sure some teachers do; it is an open market, after all.
And good luck to 'em. I'm sure their performance and experience deserve it, while sports players and bankers get squillions of moneys just for turning up. |

Places I've worked in the gulf and their salaries in USD after all deductions at the end of my contracts:
Raytheon 8700
BAE 9100
Vinnell 6200
General Dynamics 11,200 (not a typo)
I have a BA. |

Did you have to pay for housing or anything out of those numbers?

As I said, those numbers are after all deductions.
A question came up in my inbox regarding the difficulty in obtaining a position with BAE as an American. My response will be made public for all to share.
It was very difficult, but not as difficult as getting a job with Aramco. |

Corporate employment never attracted me and I had no desire to live in a Gulfie version of the Canal Zone ! (ie ARAMCO "Camp" as the inmates quaintly describe that place in Dhahran)
Nor did I ever consider a career with the military ! Civvy Street was good enough for me ! |

I think the hanging gardens version of KFUPM may not have been watered in the years since you left scot47... it looked pretty much like the Canal Zone when I was last there a few months ago. |
