I agree with the advice to warn students to observe and respect personal space issues, and body language/eye contact in the classroom.

One other issue in the US probably depends on location, but in general, they should be warned against crossing busy streets haphazardly. This is both for the prospect of getting stopped/fined by the police and because drivers in most areas won't expect it to the same extent as in China and it could cause an accident.

Walking alone after dark
Depending on the location and living situation (dorm/homestay) a warning on drug culture may be suitable

Shoving money at the KFC girl and shouting your order generally won't work. Wait in line.

Guys, please don't tell your male professors/teachers/ any male that they are handsome or 'very handsome!'. Just don't.

Don't ask everyone how old they are and if they're married. Talk about the weather, or your classes, or your major. Seriously.

Guys, enunciate and use your dam vocal chords. Use your lungs. Stop freaking whispering. So annoying. Speak up! Sorry, it's a pet peeve of mine.

Do not ask everyone their favorite band and then ask them if they like One Direction/Westlife/ Any Crappy Boy Band. Grow the heck up. Don't follow up by asking them to listen to a Westlife/etc./etc. song. Back off. We get it, you really only want an excuse to listen to another lame BB song. If you tell everyone you like boy bands they will think you're gay. You will not enrich anyone's life by introducing them to the wonders of boy bands. You're in the west now so for the sake of all that is good, listen to something else.

Oh, and guys, doing boy band dance routines between classes will not win you any honey. Trust me.

Do not ask people detailed questions with respect to why they do what they do, then offer critiques. That is rude. If they want your advice, they'll ask for it.

The above includes criticizing what and how people eat. Not everyone eats vegetables and rice.

Yes you've been told that Chinese are vastly superior to others, but may I suggest you keep it a secret? You might experience a rude awakening.

Surprise! Western girls are not all 'hot blooded'. Sorry! Sad but true. (Dang I wish it were true!) Treat women well and you'll be fine. Miley Cyrus is a talentless embarrassment, not an icon. I really want to keep this a secret so you'll all repeatedly crash and burn on the dating scene, but ... dam I guess I'll be nice.

Try not to have a heart attack when you see a woman in a bikini. Western women have curves. You'll get used to it.

Do not expect to improve your test score by imploring the teacher with various pleas and excuses or by other means. Do not fail every exam and expect to hongbao your way into a good final grade. Won't happen.

Sounds like your personal list of pet peeves (nearly all) and not real input.

I've looked in this thread for your valuable input and came up short.

What the other guy said was a legitimate effort to contribute to this thread. Your post on the other hand.....

EDIT: I took the troll bait. Sorry. Won't crap up this thread again.

For high school or university students you should probably warn them about some of the behavior they'll come across with local students that they might not be accustomed to. Smoking dope (already mentioned I believe), binge drinking, "girls gone wild" stuff. They (especially girls) could be pressured into doing something stupid.

college or high school students? regardless, you want them to stay safe
and healthy. explain to them that what they see on the tv, in movies, and
so on doesn't necessarily correspond to real life.

they may love dressing and talking like their favorite rap artists, but that
behavior could get them seriously killed. there is a certain word often
used that they don't want to go near.

george carlin gave us 7 words you can't use on the teevee. don't use
them in america. they'll either screw up the delivery and get laughed
at (not so bad), or use them correctly and get in a fight.

explain that americans don't play fight. there's no sissy patty-cake
hand slapping culminating with chest bumping. there's real fighting.
being chinese does NOT make you a super-sumo-ninja-kungfu-master.

explain that if you get in a fight in america, your friends don't get to help
you. you're on your own. show 'em a clip of thunderdome (ok, so
sometimes the movies are real!). two men enter, one man leaves.

teach them how to cross the street. they're not used to fast cars and
will be unable to judge speed and distance, especially with their noses
glued to their fruit ninja cellphone video game.

teach them how to ride a bicycle, particularly how to stop at an intersection,
and how to merge into the flow. explain the concept of right-of-way.

after p.e. class when they hit the showers, don't stare at other guys'
wedding tackle. don't peep over the urinal partitions for a quick peek.
don't massage your buddy while he's micturating. it's not cool, bro.

I've read this thread with interest. Obviously there's huge cultural differences.

I'm sure a Chinese person/ someone who has lived in China for a while could flip this advice around and list behaviours common in western countries that are not acceptable in China. As someone moving to China in February, who has never been to China before, can someone enlighten me on some of these behaviours?

Don't tip.
That's it.

Although it's acceptable...I'd suggest you break the habit of shaking hands.

Along with not tipping, people typically don't split the bill at restaurants here. Usually one person pays and it's normally the person who does the inviting. This isn't a hard and fast rule, some people do "go dutch" but one person paying is the norm here. And the dishes are shared by everyone at the table, you don't order just for yourself. Exceptions are some western style steakhouse joints where you get your own plate of food.

So basically its date with the opposite sex rule even if there is no romantic intention? Saying that, I know if the girl does the asking in the UK it would be a bit odd for her to pay too!

I'm quite happy about the food sharing rule, that's what I always do if I'm at an Asian restaurant with a group!

There must be other things that westerners do which is considered strange or offensive though?

Get really confrontational, in people's face about something, flip out in the classroom and go apeshit over something relatively minor? Seen it all before.

you might want to start a new thread on unacceptable westernfolks behavior.

lessee...not necessarily common in western countries.....to be avoided here:

proselytizing, using religious tracts as 'study' materials.
having inappropriate relations/relationships with the students.
hitting on girls when boyfriends/husbands are present.
attempted deprogramming in regard to the three T's.
physically abusing the students.
working illegally.
