If they've got you on a WHV then you can't work more than half a work week and work is defined as prep time included. Also, as a WHV they must deduct withholding tax, not PAYE tax, which IIRC is 20%. At the end of the contract they must recalculate the tax balance and refund you what they have over-deducted. If they are deducting 20% as required by law then they will definitely be refunding you money. A 10.5 hour work day is also outside the Labour Standards.
So, all in all, a pretty typical low grade law breaking ESL offer really. |

Where did you get that from? There's nothing about a 10 hour work week here:
http://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/w_holiday/
But now I've actually read the terms & conditions of the WHV, it doesn't look so appropriate. They say that:
- they only issue a limited number of WHV's every year
- having a job lined up already is fine
- but your primary purpose should be travel, so you should show them your travel plans, write a short essay about why you want to come to Japan, and so on
Still, there's nothing else that looks sketchy, so I'd give the school the benefit of the doubt in this case. |

Where did you get 10 hours from? I said half a work week. I should have been clearer and said no more than half of full time. But then, given that checks are so infrequent (I've only read about a couple ever happening - all at ski fields) I doubt it would be a problem. |
