As many of you know my wife was in the hospital for a week and could not work because of doctors orders. We are not sure whether or not to be upset about it. The kids have already paid my boss for their semester and it feels like he's making money off of her being sick by not paying her salary for that week. She's also expected to make up some of the classes she missed...without pay? Confused I know the contract states 2 sick days, but this was not a flu or cold, the doctor kept her at home. Just wondering how you all would feel in this situation. I'm thinking it's my bosses right not to pay, but we're not sure how to approach the whole thing. Any advice would be appreciated.

i think its quite simple. your boss doesn't pay, your wife doesn't work. at worst, couldn't she use the two sick days (and be paid) and then go the remainder of the time off without pay? this is what i would make of the situation anyway, but the chinese likely see it a different way.

when i was in korea, i missed a month due to being in hospital. no work, no pay, someone else did my classes while i was gone.

Sorry to hear that your wife has not been the best - being sick in a foreign country is never easy.

It would seem that you are limited to the two days sick pay for your wife as per the contract, though as for having to work without pay to make up for lost time - no way hozay- bet that isn't in the contract!

From my own experience with my Chinese management, it seems that they will try and get away with anything that you let them. So my advise is if they are not willing to cut you some slack with extra sick days, then do not budge on working without pay. If you don't draw the line on what is acceptable treatment, it will only get worse.

Good luck, I hope things get resolved in a reasonable way.

well, we've found that it is a matter of just not letting them get away with it. Our boss has been great but money is still No.1. My wife explained to him why she deserved to get paid and he complied. This is a new company and our boss recognizes the fact that we've been a big part of the growth of his company. No one really cares about my circumstances here but I will say that this situation worked out perfectly.Cheers!
