"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."
Rest in peace, Mr. Mandela - you changed the world for the better, and your legacy will live on.

John |

And while honouring and remembering Mandela, let us remember all those who sacrificed for democratic South Africa.

A hero has passed away. Nelson Mandela was the last of the truly great 20th century figures, a global icon who defeated one of the most evil of ideologies, a political giant who helped to bring humanity together.
He had a unique, astonishing ability to forgive, unify and embrace his former opponents and became an inspiration for a generation.
Madiba, you made the world a better place; we are eternally in your debt. Thank you and sleep well. |

While apartheid was a cruel and unfair system, it also produced a wildly successful and prosperous society. Mandela, the terrorist, the dictator and the idiot, destroyed a great society and the quality of life for blacks plummeted. Murder rates (largely black on black) skyrocketed.
I think it is very sad and misguided to honor such a generally horrible man.

Dear steki47
Why, even that Tea Party conservative, Ted Cruz, a US Senator from Texas, put a tribute to Mandela on his facebook page:
"Nelson Mandela will live in history as an inspiration for defenders of liberty around the globe. He stood firm for decades on the principle that until all South Africans enjoyed equal liberties he would not leave prison himself, declaring in his autobiography, 'Freedom is indivisible; the chains on any one of my people were the chains on all of them, the chains on all of my people were the chains on me.' Because of his epic fight against injustice, an entire nation is now free.
We mourn his loss and offer our condolences to his family and the people of South Africa."
Some of his facebook fans, however, would seem to agree more with you.

"Wildly successful and prosperous" for whom? Not for 80% of the country.

I was looking at the economy overall and so your point is well made. Apartheid SA built more hospitals and highways in black areas under apartheid. Educational opportunities for blacks has definitely improved post-apartheid. Crime and murder rates among blacks soared post-apartheid, life expectancy dropped. |

Yes, thanks for the link. I actually see Mandela as more of a bumbler than an accomplished terrorist/criminal. Much of the early violence he was associated with was led by whites (and Indians, IIRC), largely of the Communist party. Mandela was arrested with explosives and not for farming purposes. |

I think that whatever his faults, he served his time well and after 27 years became a driving force for change in the country, he could have just stayed at home and drowned in his own remorse of been banged up for so long, takes a special human being to do what he did after he came out, bit like that other politicial icon from the U.K who used to be the Prime Minister, you know who I'm talking about ! |
