Perhaps you are at least partially correct. But there are a few things here that make me think that this school is being so. Of course, maybe I am reading into certain things the wrong way, or have received partial incorrect information, but here is why I stated such.
1. I think when a school responds by the threat that you will be barred from ever working again in China they are being unreasonable.
2. I don't know what the details of his housing situation are, but if it is paid housing then a large deposit and Internet for a year sounds odd. Are they deriving extra income from this sort of relationship with their teachers? I bet if he left an envelope with the money for the school, and did the midnight run, they would turn around and charge the next teacher for Internet a year in advance.
3. The fact that he seems to be paying back the school for the agency fee is very fishy. Everybody here knows you should never pay a fee. But if you do so, why is he giving the money to the school to give to the agency? It sounds like they have an unethical relationship that benefits them at the expense of the teacher. Maybe he is talking about a housing agency fee. But does that make sense either?
4. I didn't quite understand why he was only going to get 300 for December, but also odd.
As an aside, I don't think there is anything worse than borrowing money from a school. My first school in China and my last in Saudi offered such and I informed them I had money. Other teachers would come like this one did and once they got that leverage on the teacher, it was a completely different relationship. I am sure there are exceptions, but think that not borrowing money should be one of the top ten commandments for how not to get screwed by your ESL employer.
Probably be best if he stated the school, then we would have a better idea who he is dealing with.

OP hasn't returned for follow up. we're only guessing, but...
1. he says he wanted to break the contract, school says no. we don't
know what he said in response. did he ask them "what would happen if i
just leave?"
2. obviously not provided housing. he gets a housing allowance, and the school
helps him locate an apartment. he is responsible for paying the bills using
his housing allowance. apartment rental often requires 3-6 months in
advance, plus one month to the agency.
3. his three items are all listed under housing, so would assume the fee
is to the rental agent. sounds like he arrived without much cash, so the
school gave him an advance. sounds like a nice school.
4. why getting 300? i'll guess he means 300 dollars. he said he was going
to finish early. how early? we don't know. maybe after the first week of
december? perhaps the semester at the school has already ended? |
