A hero has passed away. Nelson Mandela was the last of the truly great 20th century figures, a global icon who defeated one of the most evil of ideologies, a political giant who helped to bring humanity together.

He had a unique, astonishing ability to forgive, unify and embrace his former opponents and became an inspiration for a generation.

Madiba, you made the world a better place; we are eternally in your debt. Thank you and sleep well.

While apartheid was a cruel and unfair system, it also produced a wildly successful and prosperous society. Mandela, the terrorist, the dictator and the idiot, destroyed a great society and the quality of life for blacks plummeted. Murder rates (largely black on black) skyrocketed.

I think it is very sad and misguided to honor such a generally horrible man.

Why, even that Tea Party conservative, Ted Cruz, a US Senator from Texas, put a tribute to Mandela on his facebook page:

"Nelson Mandela will live in history as an inspiration for defenders of liberty around the globe. He stood firm for decades on the principle that until all South Africans enjoyed equal liberties he would not leave prison himself, declaring in his autobiography, 'Freedom is indivisible; the chains on any one of my people were the chains on all of them, the chains on all of my people were the chains on me.' Because of his epic fight against injustice, an entire nation is now free.
We mourn his loss and offer our condolences to his family and the people of South Africa."

Some of his facebook fans, however, would seem to agree more with you.
