My colleague recently obtained a tax sheet and he was adamant that it didn't state the employer's name. Perhaps it was in the form of a tax code, however..?

Well.. I've been working with an instructor visa when strictly speaking I should be on humanities - the school never seemed to care. I'm anxious now to find out if immigration are (a) likely to notice and (b) likely to penalise me for it if they do (ie. not grant me a new one). |

In my view, the fact that "the school never seemed to care" reflects very poorly on the school.
You have just confessed to an immigration infraction on a publicly visible internet forum. The Immigration Bureau has a zero tolerance policy these days, and even maintains a "report an illegal immigrant" website for reporting people like you. I hope you've taken precautions to retain your on-line anonymity.
Unless someone can tell you otherwise, I suggest that you assume the worst and find yourself an immigration lawyer. You might be able to regularise your visa status by taking a trip to Korea and applying from there, or something similar.
I don't know what tax document your friend has, but if you have a regular job (i.e. you're not self-employed) the document you'll need for immigration is called a 源泉徴収票 (gensenchoushuhyou). It always shows the name of the employer. |

Absolutely. It's not a reliable school!

I am. I am assuming the worst case scenario at this point is that, if I simply don't have the right documents to attempt a renewal, I'll have to leave Japan before my visa expires. I'm really bummed-out about this but I am hopeful that I should at least be able to come back in the future on a fresh visa. |

Good luck!
I think an immigration lawyer will be able to help you find a solution. |

Thanks.
From all the information I can gather I think I'm going to do an old-fashioned visa run to Korea; leave shortly before it expires, come back as a tourist, and apply for a totally new COE with my school. It'll take a lot of time/money but I'd rather not lie to immigration now and risk being denied access to Japan forever. |

| Personal experience with immigration in Osaka was that they didn't care if you were teaching English at an eikaiwa with an instructor visa or working at a JHS with a specialist in humanities visa. In fact, a friend who works as an ALT for Interac just got his specialist in humanities visa renewed. |
