At the university level are there a minimum number of teaching hours required for a teacher to obtain a Z Visa? Is it totally up to what the school decides? |

There is but as tho what it is I'm not sure... I know I only do 10 per week and the FAO lady told me that they couldn't report how many hours I actually worked or I would not receive the continuance of the workers book and therefor no RP. |

I never thought of that. I had a really light schedule at one school (ten hours), and the FAO wouldn't remit taxes. Maybe I was under the minimum number of hours.
Good question there. |

I have been led to believe that it is a minimum of 12 teaching hours per week to be classified as full time and thus Z visa eligible as a teacher (university or otherwise)...of course this information could very well be wrong. Using 12 hours per work as a base with my current training center, who pays me by the hour, it works out with no problems. I work a ton during the summer and winter breaks and almost nothing the rest of the year...but the average works out to 12 hours per week and there have been no issues. |

what does it matter?
IF it's a law, PSB will only look at the contract, which will be written
as "up to xx hours per week." they don't check how many hours
you actually put in.
want low hours in the contract? fine. write it as 8 hours teaching, plus
office hours and miscellaneous duties for a total of 20 hours per week.
back to IF it's a law. so what? this........is...........china. how many of
these so-called requirements (or safea suggested guidelines) are
actually enforced? really.....if PSB isn't interested in your actual teachin'
qualifications, would they really care how many hours you put in? |

PSB will only examine the FEC.....it is the lack of hours on the contract that can prevent the issuing of the FEC. In my case she said she didn't report the number of hours.. so I am not sure if she "fudged" it or ignored the reporting .. but I think tht since Beijing is mostly computerized that there is a space on the e-form indicating how many hours are required and a minimum amount of hours is required... I have heard it is 14 min in Beijing... but that is what I have been told and all contract prior to this years was for 14..it was only this year when I went down to 10 hrs per week that anything was said.

The actual number of hours won't be known when you apply for your Z. For this reason it is usually mentioned as a max ie 20 or a bracket ie 12-20.
If your school gives you less than the minimum (I'm talking public sector) you still get paid your 5-6000 and your school will know the risks and act accordingly.
If you get near or below 12 expect a few electives to be added to your schedule. These are a great barometer of your teaching (or entertainment) ability, as good attendance means good value. |

The number of hours only becomes important when seeking the work book....does the app for the z visa state the number of hours.... I came over on an L and converted...so I have never seen the app for a z... I thought it was the same app as the L or x.... what I was referring to is when you apply for a work book... all information is tied up in a nice bow and then presented to the labor department...incl in that information is the number of hours you have been contracted to work... now if this can be left blank or if some number has to be put in the space....I don't know... |
