Hey meyanga, not a clue where you are at, I would forget China, the money is not that good. Living conditions for yourself and the children, that is a concern for sure.

How about a western country, with all of then qualifications, you could quite easily teach in the UK or Europe.

Surreal is the word.
I'm currently helping a former student look for a job in BJ and I'm not convinced that it would be a good move.
That said, she is currently in Guangzhou so no stranger to pollution.
I wonder if Western diplomats now see Beijing as a hardship posting. On a par with Kabul, but for different reasons.

Just my small contribution. It might be useful to read a couple of books to give you another perspective.

Lost on Planet China: J Maarten Troost is by a man who spent, if I remember correctly, a year in China. I distinctly remember in a TV interview him saying that after due reflection he decided not to bring his young children precisely because of the pollution.

There was also a report recently of an eight year old girl getting lung cancer. I have the link somewhere if you want it.

Another book you might like to read is: Why China wil Never Rule the World: Troy Parfitt, which aside from giving his often eye-popping experiences there, also mentions the pollution.

Of course, read with discernment. Parfitt has been accused of exaggeration (but he is bang on the money about Taiwan anyway).

Aside from pollution, be aware that you won’t be in Kansas. You’ll have the same stress others face here with children to worry about on top.

If you do decide to come however, I suggest you go to a coastal city where the air pollution is usually blown out to sea (in Fujian's case, occasionally out to Taiwan ...)

You don't get much from China that's free:

The pollution is not limited to the air. Human deification along the streets and waterways is common, spitting/hacking/coughing in crowded public areas with no regard to cover up, atrocious food sanitation practices as well as general trash strewn everywhere makes for a not so ideal place for your children.
