So, I'm going to China as a tourist. Of course, I will need to get my Tourist Visa changed to a Z Visa before starting work; I'll be going to Hong Kong for that. Do I need a multiple entry Visa for China if I'm planning on taking a trip over to Hong Kong? Thanks everybody Very Happy

Well, if you are successful in obtaining the "Z" in Hong Kong, you can then re-enter China and have 30 days to get squared away with the residence permit. However, if you read enough posts here on the subject, you will learn that getting the "Z" in HK is not always a sure thing. Certainly no slam dunk! If you still have the opportunity, I would opt for the multi-entry just to be safe.

your post is not clear , but assuming you arrive in the mainland, do the tourist thing , then travel to HK just for the Z visa, then no multiple entry L visa is needed. (the Z visa gets you back into the mainland).

If you are travelling to HK as part of your tourist trip and come back into the mainland after visiting there, then yes you will need a multiple entry L visa .

Joeking, if you've got Hong Kong listed on the work permit-slash-invitation letter as the place where you're applying for the work visa then it will be a slam dunk. It's not possible for everyone to get the Z visa in Hong Kong but people will know whether or not they can do it before they get to Hong Kong, so there's not really much risk here.

Every thing you say is true, but what happens if he only has a single entry and is unsuccessful in obtaining the "Z"?

Ok, but I would advise at least getting a single entry that allows you to stay longer than 30 days, to make sure you have enough time to get all documents ready. I had to fly to HK twice, the first time just to get a fresh 60 days on my multi visit tourist visa because my employers were piddling around.
