I was going to attend the class in August, but will have to wait until November. I will post some reviews of the class once I actually go.

Good luck in Playa with the International House course. Please post again as you are part way through or finish it. I am interested in hearing what you think as I may take the course in the late fall/early winter.  |

| Check out the posts under TEFL in Paradise on this board. It might give you some helpful information. I was in the very first CELTA in Playa -- PM me if you have any specific questions. Also, it would be great to hear some opinions form the group in the second CELTA course which should be ending this week or thereabouts. Oh, Jack, closer to your age than probably most people on the boards--definitely "GO FOR IT"! It was well worth my time and I quickly found a job in Mexico. |

| A friend of mine took that training a couple of months ago. He thought it was generally pretty good, but that the person giving it was pretty rigid--a real color-inside-the-lines type. |

Maybe a bit off track from the original question, but . . .
If I estimated correctly using info from the CELTA/Playa web site, the cost of the course + accommodation comes to about $2,300 USD for the least expensive option. Transportation to Playa, meals (depending on accommodation option,) and other expenses are extra.
For people coming to Mexico in search of TEFL jobs, as a general rule of thumb, I usually recommend having about $2,000 USD in reserve + transportation to get "back home" in case things don't work out. Even though a person might not need to spend all of that amount, I think it's a safe figure to cover initial/settling-in expenses and keep one going until regular pay checks start coming in. However, if a person had student loans or other debts to pay while teaching here, I believe he'd be cutting himself really short financially on typical TEFL wages.
For the course and money in reserve, we're looking at a total of something probably over $4,500 USD plus transportation "back home" if things don't work out. That's not a small amount of money, especially by Mexican standards. My point here is that if a person's financial situation is such that he can't afford to pay for a training course before he starts teaching in Mexico, he's probably going to find it really difficult to get started and survive financially as a TEFL teacher in this country. |

well, just wanted to throw in my bit
a CELTA certification is a CELTA certification where ever you go. Does not matter if it is the first class or the 100th class an IH has had.
I just finished my CELTA and my tutors both were from the UK. Every Celta tutor must have certain criteria ( a CELTA , a DELTA and I think one more certification). Most of the tutors fly around the country to accept their one month teaching posts. I was told that it was the rare exception that any institution employed a full time Celta tutor on staff.
Celta is also stricty monitored by University of Cambridge. An assessor from U of Cambridge will come in and assess the students but also the tutors. Any slip up or mix up on their part is very critical to them getting another teaching position. So, what I am trying to say is that you will have a phenomenal experience regardless. I am really satisfied with the material I learned. I know I am a better teacher becuase of it.
