Too bad I did not see this post earlier...our UNI was looking for a couple of qualified teachers for Spring, but HR doesn't work over the holiday so it's too late now.
And I think my UNI is in the minority as far as above average pay and working conditions so its a good place to be.
and uh...er..., not a recruiter!
Unfortunately I think that many UNI's will not pay for the recruiter services such as the place I am at...and therefore we can't find teachers that we need. Often we get friends of friends to work with us.
Like others have said, if you can contact the FAO directly...that's the best bet, IMO. |
Helpful post.
I've been advocating cold calling with the proviso that FAO types are even less likely to be on deck on Spring Break than they are over summer. Your comments confirm this.
Can I ask if your school's website has an obvious English language contact point for would be FTs?
Seems like a low cost option. |

@non sequitur
Unfortunately not.
We are the Intl Biz Uni attached to the Main Uni.
So most likely no one would know we are here, unless u had a friend that worked here.
In additiion, the Main Uni FAO's don't really communicate with ours...politics, ha!
And I'm guessing this is why we don't receive any apps from them.
And if the HR is not too competent......er.........then..........?? |

| The OP states his needs for a "decent" job, of which there still many if he looks. I wonder if his qualifications warrant the terms he requires of prospective employers. |

| Most good full time jobs become available 1 month before the next semester starts so by January and September, most school have made their hiring choices. |

Is it my imagination or is it true that forum members with the lowest post count are imperious and seem to know everything?
I wish I were omniscient too. |

| BP, yes SW is wrong, but please don't make such sweeping generalisations. Post count simply indicates number of posts not quality of posts, and only shows post counts associated with the current re/incarnation. |

That's a bit late, isn't it? Think about it, the employer has to organise the invite, visa etc. while the teacher has to get a medical, process the visa etc. One month seems very short notice. I know China seems to operate very last-minute, but that's pushing it, even for them.
I was under the impression most jobs are advertised around April/May for September starts. |

| Yup. 1 month before the semester starts is VERY late. Shroob is right. Often there are jobs available 1 month prior and all year round for that matter but the vast majority of positions are likely to be secured well before then. |

My main problem has been finding a position with my preferred workload.
I have yet to find one job with less than 20 contact hours per week which, for me, is just a miserable prospect.
I am willing to accept a low salary in return for a lower workload -- and I'm very flexible on location -- so I'm surprised my search has been so unsuccessful. |

It was a rhetorical question, duuuuuude.
Someone who has been a longtime past member would be better informed. |

It's late to be looking at this point, at least for university and vo-tech jobs.
Next time, try for a vocational school that has no English major. (Most don't, but some attract students who are trying to boost their GPA so they can get into a good university). There will be fewer students studying English and therefore, fewer hours. Your level of education will be a major factor in your acceptance by a university. Unless the university is desperate, it won't accept anything less that a BA. If the university is desperate, it won't have many FTs, so you can expect 18-20 hours.
Better luck next time.
It might not be too late, though. Take a look at abroadchina.org. There are lots of unfilled positions listed all over China. Just beware of any public institution that's still hiring in late January. Classes usually start in the last ten days or week of February.

Spoke to the FAO at my school (college in Jiangsu) last week and she said they are still looking for a couple of teachers. Basic conditions would be 16 hours max - likely average around 12~13 - a week. Starting salary would probably be 5,500/month. Other conditions such as apartment, staff support, school location etc. all vary between tolerable to good. Downside is I'd bet my life she *won't* be back in the office until after mid Feb meaning you'd have to be ready to move fast if you're interested in the job as best I know the first day of semester is Feb. 17th. PM if you want her contact details. PS since we'd likely be neighbors douchebags need not apply. |

So, you are posting on a public forum but don't want people to reply...um?...okaaaay
You can't just assume that a forum member with a recent join date or low post count is less informed - s/he may have been kicked off and joined again, or may have loads of experience but joined recently or not posted much, or... Just like you can't assume that longtime past members will necessarily be better informed. |

Can we believe he is less informed/ignorant because of what he posts then? Is that fair enough for you?
Anybody who claims that most of the good jobs become available one month before the semester start is off their rocker. It often takes more time then that just for the paperwork.
...and yeah...I am pretty sure this is not his first time here. Not yours either. |
