How easy is changing schools in SZ? |
Whatever you do...best of luck but I won't be a part of this conversation. You are already planning to accept a job and ditch them the moment something better comes along.

What the hell are you thinking? Seriously!
You want to sign a crappy 1 year contract and then run off after a few months to something better....and want help here on how to do it?
Piss off.
You are exactly the kind of guy that shits things up for other FT's. |
All that I want is not to sit in an empty room and think "what am I doing here, in this expensive city with such awful salary?" |

So, that is impossible to leave the school for another and better one - is it? |

So don't accept the job if you think it's an awful salary. Is this difficult to comprehend?

Think about it this way: You've accepted a job with a school and on the day you arrive you're told "Oh sorry we don't need you now, since we last spoke we've found someone we like better and we hired them instead." Accepting a job means the school is spending time, effort and money to get your visa paperwork sorted. If you aren't sure you're going to like it or follow through with it, don't accept in the first place. |

Difficult to make sense of the "logic" or "reasoning" behind the OP's post.
Seems safe to say he's taking a very bad approach to living and working in China.

Now that this thread has pretty much died off (with nothing left to "Hijack"), would anyone have the courtesy of answering my previous 2 questions?

MG,
The answer to how much money you can save will be in direct proportion to what area of the city you live, how much your housing stipend covers for the apartment in which you decide to live, and the lifestyle you live. It's easy to spend money in Shenzhen as there are many things to see and do there (shopping, travel, tourist spots, etc.) and SZ has a vibrant nightlife if you like to party, drink or eat out often at western style restaurants.
Having said that, if you sincerely try to be frugal (and earn the money at the high end of the salary scale you mentioned), shop like the locals and spend more time cooking for yourself than you do eating out, then you can save money. It really just depends on how you want to live your life and how "convenient" you need or want things to be. Again, it also depends a great deal on the COL in the district in which you live and how much you spend day-to-day on shopping, travel, etc.
I spend quite a bit of time in SZ because it's only 2 hours from where I live and work and it's a more modern city with a lot of things to see and do. I have never lived or worked there, although I came very close to accepting a job there last year. Having said that, personally, SZ is a nice place to visit, but I don't think I'd enjoy living and working there.
On the other hand, I will admit that I'm the type of guy who cares more about the quality of the job I'm working than I do about the city in which I am living and working. I know a lot of people who live and work in SZ and they like it just fine, but it's a little bit too much "rat race" for me.
Hope this information helps.

I just finished up at a private center in SZ and you should be earning 3x that amount, and you will find that a lot of places in SZ also offer an acommodation supliment on top of salary.

I am starting to work for "Disney English" China next Thursday.
After 23 days of training in Shanghai, Ill then head to Shenzhen (the city of my choice) for a 1 year contract.
Package: Salary 11'500 RMB +3'500 Housing allowance.
My questions are:
1. How much could I realistically save in Shenzhen with that income?
2. Has anyone worked for the 'Disney English' Shenzhen branch, and if so - what are the working conditions like?
Thanks for any info.

If you are at Disney English in Coastal City (area of Shenzhen), your housing stipend might cover a semi-decent 1 bedroom apartment within walking distance. You will most likely have to come out of pocket 500-800 RMB to cover bills. Shenzhen can be expensive with so many Western temptations around, but I believe one can live a comfortable life on $1000 USD (6,100 RMB) per month spending money. If very sensible you could live on less. I would anticipate the average person on your package could save 5,000 RMB per month ($800 USD).
Holiday spending not included! |
