http://tuoitrenews.vn/business/16215/mcdonalds-to-open-1st-restaurant-in-vietnam-after-tet

2-6bis Dien Bien Phu, District 1. I am not sure what the bis means.

I cut and pasted the above article into a reading sheet for one of my classes. Of six stories, it was the only one students had any interest in. Why was I not too surprised at that? Confused

Personally, I won't be there because I couldn't even stand them in the US. However, I do plan to get in to Popeye's chicken that I spotted on Hai Ba Trung.

Actually it might be a good idea to avoid this place for a while after the opening. Traffic could be bad. I passed the New World Starbucks when they opened and the lines were out of the building. This could be worse. They are supposed to have parking for 250 motorbikes and 16 cars but I bet that won't be enough on the first day.

His father-in-law is the Prime Minister of Vietnam! Henry self-servingly refers to himself as Vietnamese although he was a boat person who moved to the States and got citizenship there.

I read that his problem was not with the authorities, but was in convincing McDonalds to make the move. I understand they have rather sophisticated demographic/economic criteria about where and when they allow franchisees to open stores and likely they couldn't get their modeling to work right here.

One of the funnier comments that I saw about this was "I'm lovin' it long time".

It'd be funny/sad to see McPho and McBanh Mi. One of the appeals of SEA was escaping western commercialism. More true 10 years ago.

It was a joke, yes, I know a bit about how Mc Donald's operates and YES, it is sophisticated, Unlike Subway, which lets anybody open up a shop anywhere, Mc D's want's it's franchisee's to succeed.

KFC stayed out of VN for a while due to needing a safe, reliable supplier of chicken.

Yes. I haven't been to there in a while. I was thinking that it'll be like the big K (which we cannot mention here). Baskin Robins and 7 Elevens everywhere. Awful Paris Baguette bakeries. High-rise apartments that all look the same. I haven't been around the big two VN cities in a long time. Maybe it's already happening.

Things will be industrialized and people won't know how to make their own living. People will depend on businesses owned by the oligarchy for jobs. Old houses will be cleared in the name of development and they'll be living in apartment blocks owned by the connected.

KFC in Vinh City sells fried chicken that's under cooked. At lest, that franchise sold pink and bloody chicken *beep* for months on end in 2012-13 and refused to reimburse teachers who asked for refunds or well-cooked chicken. Even the toll-free hotline telephone call center told me to go back to Canada for complaining about dangerous "food."
