Hi...
I’m wondering if 80,000 Yen per month would be enough to live on for living expenses (minus utilities and rent) in any of the urban areas?? I don’t go out to the movies or clubs. I like to drink at bars with friends about twice a week, but I’m fine with drinking the cheap crap (got used to it in Korea). I like to eat out with friends 1-2 times a week, but I also got used to eating local food in Korea, so I think I could manage the same in Japan. However, I’m worried about the cost of fruits and vegetables in Japan in regards to grocery shopping. I am also not a shopaholic when it comes to clothes or electronics. With all that said, would 80,000 a month be about right, more than enough or would it be a struggle?? Thank you!!!! |

1, Look up
2, See that button with a magnifying glass icon that says search? Click it.
3, Search something like "Japan Living Expenses".
Hope this has been of help to you. |

I guess you could say this same exact thing to almost anyone who ever posts a question on Dave's. Hell, why should anyone post questions ever again?? Just use the search function! Stupid...
Besides, the last relevant/somewhat helpful one was from last July. Anyway, thoughts appreciated from others with actual knowledge and experience, not trolls. Thanks!! |

This topic has been covered a lot.
It depends where you live. You would spend less money outside of a big city. Tokyo is more expensive than anywhere. |

In theory, it's possible.
In practice, if you really think that drinking the local liquor is a significant money-saving concession, I doubt you have the attitude required to stay within such a tight budget.
Food is expensive here. |

I don't have the right attitude because I mentioned drinking?? I never said it was a significant money saver. It was just one of many things I listed in regards to spending money. Geez... |

No, but if you don`t want to spend much money you should not drink alcohol since it is expensive here. |

Anyway, my answer would be no, I don't think 80,000 is enough, especially if you plan on going out 2 nights a a week.
A night out on a weekend for me can cost anything from 5,000 to over 10,000 yen (not including a taxi home). So if you're anything like me then no 80,000 won't be enough for you if you plan to do it twice a week.
Also, japan doesn't really have 'local restaurants' in the same sense that the rest of Asia does. In my experience, the small local cafés/ restaurants/ shops are just as, if not more expensive than the chains. |

That's rather sobering...but important to know. Thank you for the feedback! |

Pretty much, yes.
It's not a criticism: just an observation. You have set certain minimum expectations for one aspect of your lifestyle. To meet those expectations and still meet your other day-to-day necessities on 80,000 yen / month, you'll have to go to extraordinary lengths of frugality.
But maybe you'll prove me wrong. For instance, if you're prepared to treat fresh fruit and veg as a rare luxury, and stave off malnutrition with cheap vitamin pills, then you might be able to pull it off. |
