Hey folks,
My dentist-phobia has caught up with me and I might need some major dental work (2 root canals and 2 caps) within the next two months.... I searched the forums for information but I can't find much on the topic.
Which country do you recommend for quality dental care in the area.. keep in mind I am teaching in China so there ain't much cash flying around..... |

nolefan, my friend,
come to Guangzhou or go to Hong Kong. In the former, I can recommend Dr. Lu, Tianhe, near the Guangzhou East Station; he will cost you, but he will not cost you an arm, a leg AND your teeth. He trained in the U.S.A., and I have been his patient now for 5 years. |

thanks Roger,
I am looking at some summer camps in Guangdong so I might be able (forced more like it) to head to Canton and take care of it. I am sure that the cost will be nothing compared to the arm and a leg they charge in the states... |

Chinese dentists are pretty good... I have had 2 root canals done...around 150Y each..including X-rays...no problems...very good dentist...students crowding around, but I just ask 5 kuai for tickets and nobody gets upset. So all my dental bills have been paid by selling tickets...Simple, really! |

Do they believe in anaesthetic in China? In Russia it's for p us sies. I've had a bunch of work done here and things have gone well. Maybe like tatoos, you start to like it after a while.
Actually, if you can get by without the anaesthetic, the recovery is much faster. Turns out a lot of the crappy feeling from dentist visits is from the da mn drugs. The pain is relatively short, but the drug effect lasts for hours and hours and hours. |

I'll take the longer recovery. Just gimme the drugs ... I don't care what they'll say about me in Russia. |

I've had a few trips to the nearby Shanghai Number 5 Hospital. Modern equipment, autoclaved instrument sets, anaesthetic, and cheap. Very similar to back home, except the cost is about 10%, and I had six people staring into my mouth, rather than one or two. Some were other patients.
If your Chinese isn't too good you may want to take a local friend though. |
