When subbing at a Korean kindy in SH last year, I worked with a man who had what was obviously an African accent. When i asked him where he was from, he said "I'm from Canadian". I smiled oh-so-slightly. He probably didn't notice, he was too busy sweating profusely. Aircon situation.
The next day, I chatted him up, and he admitted that he was actually from Cameroon, but he did so with no prompting from me, just feeling guilty about lying I guess. He had needed to lie to get the job, and lie he did. However no one at the school cared, he sang and danced with the wee tots all morning, and got paid around 180 RMB an hour - cash, no taxes taken out - not bad money! He was actually a student at Jiaotong uni, just making some extra cash.
There are not enough native speakers to fill up all the schools in SH, let alone the rest of China, ha! |
