P.S. I'm pretty old school, so I still call it The Ukraine but it appears that the definite article in front of Ukraine is not always used?

I like those country names that contain(ed) the definite article- definitely a special breed:

The Ukraine, The Sudan, The Gambia, The Philippines, The Congo, The Netherlands...

If they decide to split from The UK, I will start calling it The Scotland.

Warm regards,
fat_chris

Dear respected Fat_chris

The Peoples' Soviet Republic of the Ukraine is in turmoil at the moment, with a very volatile situation unfolding as we speak. It is without a doubt the belief of the Party that this is the work of destabilsing agents of the expansionist EU, in full concert with the pernicious influence of the Americans' intelligence agencies.

The peace-loving peoples of all Slav lands wish only the best for our brother nations and we hope that the crisis will pass without further violence. A world without the beauty and splendour of the Khreshchatyk would be a poorer one for all.

With Communist greetings

Sasha

The insane Eurocrrats seem to think that they are ready to admit a country of 45 million souls. After the disastrous results of admission of new states, can they really handle Ukraine ?

Lots of truth there. If a country like Greece can be deemed a threat to the whole EU project, then the massive problems associated with the Ukraine, plus geopolitical tensions with Russia, would surely make the whole notion unthinkable...

And the EU has already said it may not take in a country of 5 million souls…THE Scotland!

Warm regards,

I believe that is an opinion expressed only by former ministers of the EU. Not sure it is an official line
