Is it now the case that all English teachers in China have to get a criminal record check as well as the onerous health report that I had to get? I am in Korea now, and my contract ends in April. I am considering working in China after this, but even in China there seem to be fewer jobs and ever more bureaucracy and paperwork. Is this true across the board? My concern would be time and cost. In order to get my Z-visa, the first time I came to China, I had to get a doctor's report to say I was free of about 30 different exotic diseases. That cost 380 pounds as the NHS would not cover it.
Now, I am noticing jobs that require a criminal record check too. I have nothing to fear, but I would be applying from Korea not the U.K.
More bureaucracy adds more cost, and takes more time. The added time means that if there's an unexpected delay a nice job might slip out of my grasp. How much paperwork is there?

The CR check is not required across the board in China , only in some cities like Beijing and Qingdao. Find some other threads on this board that give more details , and links for how to get the UK check done from afar.

The health check for the z visa should be rudimentary , because you will need another one in China when you arrive (always?, invariably? - not sure )
But I think the Chinese embassy in Korea will be able to tell exactly what you need for the z visa application there.

Some provinces now also won't allow you to make a z visa in a third country (like Korea) but only in your home country - again find an employer who knows how to, and can, process the paperwork through his/her PSB and get the application accepted by the chinese embassy in Korea.

+ 1 @ teenoso ... this has also been my personal experience.

I have never been required to submit a CR in 4 years here, but I have never worked in any of the MAJOR cities either. It just adds another layer to the beauracray, although I can understand why it may be gaining in popularity.

YMMV on this but I doubt you have to do every single test on the medical check. (I didn't) Get some basic blood tests, HepA B, probably HIV and have them official-lookingly stamp it with an official looking stamp. That should do it.

They're gonna make you do another medical check when you get to the country anyway
