Each student in a group gets one picture and has to describe to the other group members whats in the picture without showing them. They then have to figure out what order the pictures should go in. They can then make up a story based on the pictures, and after that they can write the story, and the teacher can write some prompts on the board to help them elaborate in their story. If some groups finish early you can have them switch stories, read them, and then add a funny ending to them. I've done this and it's gone well, but I need more picture stories. So far, I only have one.

You don't need purpose-made material for this. Many four-panel comic strips will work as well. You may have to blank out the dialog but that's easy to do. Try some Calvin and Hobbes.

Ok, thanks. Do you know if there is a specific website where its good to download them from, or should you just do a Google search?

they gots a thing called the googles.

well, go to the googles and look for stuff, and stuff.

just type in "weird pictures" or "scary pictures" and in the
results, just be looking at the images.

download them pictures, print 'em off full-page size.
get the kiddies to write about what's happening in the pitcher.

I'm talking about four pictures that go together to tell a story. I think some are made specifically for ESL. The students have to figure out what order the pictures go in by telling each other what's happening in their picture.

I'm doing this kind of thing to coach a couple of students for and English competition. They get show the picture, which is a group of four, and have ten seconds to look at it, and then two minutes to talk about it. They have to find the theme that links the pictures together. The school gave me a bunch of them that they already had, but there's a lot of Chinese text in them and the quality is not good, so I made my own. I just picked a theme, the environment, road safety, school life, etc, then used Google images to find four suitable pictures. For instance the road safety one has a picture of a busy road, a picture of a mother and child using a pedestrian crossing, a picture of a crashed car, and a picture of a kid running across a road. I put all four pictures onto a Powerpoint slide, but of course you could just stitch them together in Word or something and then print them out. To be honest, the hardest part was thinking of themes. Finding the pictures was fairly easy.

well, whatever you do, don't go to the googles
and type in "picture stories without words."

I have a pdf book called Sequences. picture stories for esl. I got the book 3 years ago but can't remember where I downloaded it.

It includes
60 units. Each unit contains a drawings page. On each drawings page there is a sequence of six drawings, mostly without words or captions. The drawings show
the sequence of events that go with a particular activity, such as going grocery shopping or visiting a doctor. Each drawings page is complimented by a page of
vocabulary building exercises.

I could upload it to a file sharing site and give you the link or you can do a search for it.

Just look at the pictures...and choose the slow download. You may have to wait a little bit before downloading the second or third one from the site.

Thanks for the upload!
