13 days in a row? WTF? |
Thirteen days in a row is a definite WTF.
However, this is an even bigger WTF:

My immediate response to this was: "Suckah. Poor dumb b@stard."

Sucker fool was my immediate thought.
But once you get sucked into the cycle of work-wife-kid-BC-ESL, you're on a one way road to ... perpetual suckiness.
His bad. |

It has been a couple of days since that latest email from the BC. Who is agreeing to that proposal? I imagine many won't agree. I heard that the BC is changing over from a Diplomatic Mission to a business, but I wouldn't know how accurate that is. Would make sense though if they plan to only employ people they give visas to. None of the examiners I've spoken to want to sign. |

I'm not so sure.
This has really split examiners into 2 factions - the alarm clock-phobic ambition-less "IELTS to the grave" crew who think the new deal is great.
Then there are the sort of people who the BC claims to value - people who at least attempt to keep one foot in the real world by holding down a 'real' job or doing something else outside of their comfort zone.
Many of those in the 2nd group have helped the BC hugely over the last few months to keep things running as normally as possible but are now having the door closed on them (unless they'd rather do a boring & repetitive job full time rather than as a nice little sideline which perfectly compliments their teaching).
I believe there are good people in both camps but what examiners lack is a united voice to push back at the BC to ensure the small print of the new deal is to our satisfaction.
I'm pessimistic about said small print and suspect most examiners will respond positively to the new deal despite not knowing the details (after all, why would you want to exclude yourself from at least viewing the details in the future by opting out at this early stage??).
I suppose the one thing we can agree on is that the good times have rolled. |

Perhaps this is more about the BC sticking to the labor laws of china. |

I re-certified recently, and am getting all the necessary paperwork from BC, so that come summer I am ready to roll, out of the Muddled Kingdom.
To where? Not sure. But away, maybe one country away or perhaps a continent away.
I live in what was one of the most cozy, comfortable cities, and it's turned into an overdeveloped, overcrowded, over-touristed noisy mess.
I'm going to exam till the day I leave and hit the road.
BC messed us around too much in recent months for me to have them own my Z visa in the future. Maybe it's just a case of burn-out (literally, given the way the skies looks these days). |

So, it's a done deal? Examiners must now be full time with the private business? |

I'm wondering this as well. If I stay in Chengdu next year, I would like to sign on with BC as a weekend warrior, part-time invigilator…if that is possible and if they would let me.
I would already have the z-visa from another outfit.
Hmm…
Warm regards,

It's a done deal and this was made clear in the last communication from the BC. The week-end warriors are soon to be history and you are either full-time with the BC or you are not working for them. The job, as they now describe it, sounded decent but this is the BC so you never know.
I was ready to sign on with them but 2 things bother me: This is the BC and they do not have a recent stellar record of efficient and intelligent management. Do I, as another poster mentioned, want to have my visa with them? The other reason is that you are now completely on your own in this country. That could be OK if you have a Chinese spouse but scary to those of us who depend on a uni for housing, utilities, various support, etc. I do not think I am ready now or ever will be in the future to handle this country without a lot of support.
It was a fun ride while it lasted but the BC has put its foot into a really big pile and nothing will ever be the same. I'm going back to my original plan of working for a uni and doing lots of side work. I think I can make just as much money as I did with the BC but in fewer hours when you factor in all the traveling.

By "soon", I mean certainly this year and I personally expect the new system to be in force this summer. Of course, the BC admits they are running into problems and they will face delays.
One other factor to consider is what a previous poster mention in passing. This job is BOOOOOOOOOORING, perhaps the most boring job I have ever had in my life. Yeah, the pay can be good but steeling yourself for 2 or 3 days of unending tedium is bad enough, but imagine having to do this and nothing else every working day of your life. I am not that desperate just yet.
