I listened to an interview of a linguist who went to the outback of Australia for ten years to study one of the aboriginal languages and document it. Do you find that hard to believe?
One should understand that these early Arabic grammarians had a higher purpose in gathering their data in order to preserve the language of religious texts. It may be similar to Christian missionaries who go to poverty stricken areas and document the local languages. There are more than enough grammar treatises written by those missionaries to prove that it is possible. |
