| I personally really liked Qingdao because it had a decent combination of nightlife, shopping, conveniences and apparent air quality. I lived in Beijing and Shanghai but only visited Qingdao. I've no idea of the work situation in Qingdao. |
I have the same experience with Haikou. People often knock it, but I spent 2 weeks there on holiday and really liked the place. The worst thing was the traffic. Other than that...air quality, conveniences, activities... all great. If I could find a good job there, I'd love it. |

| The air is bad all over china I am in a city that used to brag about being the greenest town in china, and the pollution still says about a 200 level, up North is the worst at Beijing, there were weeks in the winter when it was recommended to not go outside.......and Shanghai isn't far from me and the pollution there is just as bad now, the pollution all over china is bad, and working here is just as bad with their attitudes. |

yesterday was invited to go cycling with the ladies of the department,
headed out of town to the cherry orchards.
today shall cycle thru the pineapple fields to the pristine beach.
will stop for a coconut fresh off the tree.
yesterday i saw a (rare) plastic bag fluttering in the breeze....it was beautiful. |

Tier 2 cities are where it's at in my opinion. There are many scattered around China. I happen to live in one. The sky is mostly clear, usually blue, and there is an abundance of fresh produce grown in the local farms. Last weekend I went strawberry picking and although they don't claim it to be organic, they also don't use chemicals.
The idea that you have to live in Shanghai or some other major city to enjoy China is false. Tier 2 cities usually have a cheaper cost of living and you can actually save money if you're remotely sensible about things.
There are mountains, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, and miles of beautiful scenery just outside the city where I'm living. Inside the city there's all the modern conveniences you could want, and at a cheaper price than the big cities.
Out of your list, I'd pick Hangzhou. |

| For my money I'd pick WeiHai - clean, quiet, and modern. I would have selected Xiamen except the water is filthy at the beach - all year. |
