I recently sent out emails, just to see what was out there, searching for potential summer jobs at universities.

No one responded with actual summer jobs, but a few did reply with information about teaching positions with their universities for the following semester. I just sent a short, general email after finding contact information on universities in areas I was interested in. I probably sent about 5 and heard back from 2. I think these were more of what you were expecting - if I would have said I was interested, I probably could have had the jobs just after sending in my resume, degree, and photo.

There are not as many jobs in universities compared to language schools since they would rather hire and keep highly qualified teachers for many years than hire a new one every year. For this reason, they have stricter requirements and some of them even get direct referrals from their affiliated universities overseas. It is still possible to get university jobs but it won't be as easy.

sis, most unis close for the summer. summer camps are out there, mostly
organized by language mills.

from what i hear, they're not exactly camps.......no cookouts or hiking in
the wilderness or swimming in lake stinkykaka. nope, just 10 hours a
day, 6 days a week, doing cram grammer sessions with classes made
up of 40-50 middle schoolers.

Actually this was exactly what I was looking for.

Some schools have these kinds of things listed in their websites from a few years ago so I figured I would just send out some emails in case one turned out to be an option.

I want to teach in China again, but don't want to commit to a whole year, which makes it nearly impossible to find work.

Although the kumbaya thing does sound appealing.

Take a look in your local CraigsList for summer camps in China in the Education area. American recruiters have gotten in on the act. Watch out for the L and F visa problem, and be aware that your incoming airfare won't be reimbursed for a two-month stint.

(I'm assuming that you're still in your home country)
