One more thing. I may have said this before: Don't take it too personally. (You've probably already figured this out already). Once, I was with a Chinese friend, and I was having a really bad China day. She thought it was funny that I was getting hacked off at my perception that everything was going wrong with my interaction with Chinese teachers, the FAO, vendors in the electronics bazaar, the woman who sold tickets in the bus station, etc.. She told me, "Don't take it personally. Those people treat everyone like that."

I have a great memory of a long-distance bus driver literally yelling at me, 'You need to 'wash your hands' (use the toilet) before we go!' His expression looked-- severely pained with worry. And hey, buying that ticket the other day took me an hour too (and two price rises and a dozen heavy sighs) even though I was probably their only customer for the whole afternoon, and then there's the dentist who kept spitting at the basin of the empty chair next to me...

But this is WHY I came to China! But as for the neoconsumer money grubbers pseudo glamor people go, well, they're much more irritating to me.

My FAO wrote back today. Still VERY terse (maybe she thinks she's just being succinct) but it does seem I'm going there to sign a contract and another year of life. She gave me good directions from the airport to my hotel, so that made feel taken care of. I'm sure it will be fine. We all need to be responsible for ourselves and make our plans wisely (Plan A, B, C, and D). No one likes depending and hoping on strangers to come through. I know I don't.

Unfortunately, in this game we have to. It helps if you're in-country and can visit, but most people here would have flown in, sight unseen to a new life. Sometimes all you can do is plan what you can and hope for the best.

Good luck!

Bill Hicks! One of the best American comedians of all time. I like George Carlin too but he can rant a bit (true rants though!).

Trying to start a fight while stoned on pot, looks like we got ourselves a reader, anyone out there in marketing? go kill yourself now, etc. funnnnnnny

I would reserve your final opinion of this FAO until you've met her in person. She might be a much different sort of tiger offline.

Enough professional integrity to be up-front about overtime policies, schedules, and duties. I have seen that principals are deliberately vague and ambiguous about things and you only find out their true intentions on the day that they demand you work 2-4 overtime hours for free or denigrate yourself by being told that part of your job is to hand out flyers in a shopping mall.

You mean you don't ask about that before you sign the contract?

Granted, schedules change, and one should not expect to see one until he arrives, but one should know how many hours to expect to work per week, and he should know the overtime policies before he arrives, and he should certainly ask about what his job will be before he signs the contract.

Again: HOMEWORK!
