They won't pay you for the summer until the fall semester begins! Gotcha! |

The school I work for does something similar, we pay full round trip air fare if you resign, and we pay it before you leave.
In all honesty there would be nothing stopping someone from resigning the contract and then returning to China and bailing.
So far in 10 years it's never happened, and I'd like to think that no one would stoop to that kind of level, and if they did that I would be smart enough to realize it and not resign such a person. I hope! |

Teacher in me coming out. Re-sign and resign are two different things. I was confused when I first saw the topic; it's clear enough in context, of course, but...... |

Right - - our school offers a one-month salary if you re-sign, but you don't get it till beginning of September. Sure there are lunkheads that can show up September 1st, get the cash and take off, but most people are not like that - - I think, I hope!
For me, due to my history and longevity with my school, I get half of the summer pay at the end of June along with all my other payouts and the other half when I start up again, along with the first 40% of my September salary. I think I'm about the only teacher that gets it this way as I've been there long enough to earn their trust - - I think, I hope! |

Not paying the teachers until the fall semester begins sounds like a good strategy, but that would mean teachers are expected to go two months without any salary. And it's also illegal to work for another company, so 2 months without salary and the ability to work for another company |

I think the expectation is that the teacher will travel through China/Asia or head back to their home country for a month or two. If you don't re-sign, you also wouldn't get paid for those months. So it's really just a signing bonus for saving the school the hassle of a new hire. |

Seconded. Thirded?
I propose "renew" as an unambiguous alternative. |

What I'm wondering is, what is to stop someone from re-signing without the intention of teaching in September? If someone did this they could still receive salary for July and August, then just bail after. How does a company protect themselves in that situation? |
what exactly are you planning? |

I'm planning to return as it's a great company and the best gig I've had in 5 years in Asia. But it's peculiar that they would offer to pay for summer when there is a chance teachers could just bail in September or October. Most schools in China do not pay for summer holiday. I guess it just seems too good to be true |

Wait. You are considering renewing your contract so that you can collect summer salary, but you intend not to return to the school.
You will be entering into a legal contract if you renew, yet you intend to dupe your employer into believing that you'll return. Think of the inconvenience you'll cause: other teachers will have to pull up the slack until another teacher can be found (if one can be found); classes may even be canceled if the other FTs can't pull up the slack. You intend to lie and steal. How are you going to get a release from your school? How will collect your pay? What might happen when your new employer calls your old employer? (That happens more often than you think). How will you get a release to work at your next school?
And people b*tch about supposedly unscrupulous recruiters. |

I get paid for the summer and paid at the end of every month. Means come Sept 1 I have been paid for the last 2 months of doing nothing and at full salary.
What keeps me from not showing up Sept 1?
My word.
Just my word.
In my life it still means something and has some value. |
