I thought of applying there last year! but ended up staying on in Korea.
What I didn't like about the conditions were at ritsumeikan there were only 4 weeks vacation for summer and the spring instead of the usual 2 months. At Sojo the vacations were ok but there was a 5 day work week and the working hours were from 10-6. So no chance to make any more money. Both had low salaries at 5 million per year including bonuses.
Do you think I made the right decision not taking them? Anyone working at either of those two places can shed light on what it is like or knows of anybody? |

Ritsumeikan University has a bad reputation, and is on the blacklist.
In the past teachers had a strike.
Never heard of Sojo.
Of course it would be nice to live in Kyoto. |

I have heard bad things about Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University. They are also on Debito's blacklist (as is the main Ritsumeikan Univ.), but I don't put a lot of weight on that alone.
taikibansei posted the below, and he is quite knowledgeable and experienced in Japanese universities.

I also haven't heard of Sojo University.
Whether not taking the job was a good idea or not depends on a lot of things -- most importantly, how your other offers stacked up, and how happy you are in your current situation. |

Ah, Beppu. Well the students are pretty good and motivated and the English program seems good. Lots of foreign students.
Really hot in the summer. It is well known for the hot springs and shochu. |

If a single person can't save money on 5 million yen, he/she has serious issues.
The ironic thing about Ritsumeikan having a poor reputation as an employer is that the university itself is fairly good (not the best of the best but Ritsumeikan is one of the best private unis in Kansai). |

1.5 million per year for a decent 1 LDL
350000 city tax
360000 a year health and pension
350000 income tax
1 million for two overseas vacations per year
500000 per year for running leasing a car
food 500000
utilities 400000
pretty easy and that wouldn't even be extravagant just normal |

Sure, if you try to spend it all, I'm sure you could.
You could get a cheaper place than that. You can get a car for cheaper than that. You don't need to spend $5,000 on a vacation, and do it twice a year. |

Half of those numbers are either wrong or way too high. |

Are the taxes really that high?

explain how they are wrong.
they are conservative estimates! I would even go and say food would be more
Monthly would be
30000 to 50000 for a car
80000 to 150000 for a apartment
60000 on food
30000 on health and pension
30000 income tax
30000 city tax
25000 utilities
10000 cellphone
20000 going out
10000 clothes
2000 haircuts
40000 holidays air tickets divided by yearly
leaves about 40000 yen per month for spending or saving, these costs do not include satellite tv, computers, iPads, money spend on girlfriends etc.. |

Well for a start you can get 2LDKs in Beppu for 5 man
http://suumo.jp/chintai/oita/sc_beppu/nj_207/
so god knows what you could get for 120,000.
Income tax is about 10,000 a month, not 30000.
You don't need to spend 50000 yen a month on a car unless you have excessive travel costs in which case they would almost certainly be job related and partially paid for by the company. If not there's no need to spend that much unless you're a car fanatic and love driving.
1 million a year on holidays is simply living in noddy noddy land and not normal. You could do it if you wanted but it's not an essential expense in any realm of the imagination.
Finally, thousands of EFL teachers have been living here on 250000 a month for years and been able to survive quite comfortably. |

I made 4,800,000 yen last year (give or take).
The rent figure is way too high unless you've got a family.
Not sure about a car as I live in the city, but parking around me is 30k a month and you can get a used car with 1 year left on the shaken for 200k or so.
Income tax is less than 10k a month and resident's tax is around 20k a month. 60k for food is outrageous unless you can't cook - eating lots of fruits and vegetables would only get you partially to 60k.
25k for utilities is also expensive - I spent 5,000 yen on power (no gas), 3,980 yen on my internet and a bit over 7,000 yen on my phone (iPhone 5, which I'm paying for in installments) last month. |

those apartments were all over 30 years old. you would be able to hear your neighbors, the kitchen would have awful fittings, there would probably be sliding doors everywhere, and the bathrooms would look awful dis colored and the fittings would be crappy and smoke stained walls. Also all those apartments you showed were 3-20 minutes away from the train station by bus. No one wants to commute by bus in Japan. A decent apartment in beppu would be 80.000 minimum.
income tax is 8% on 500000 per month it would be about 30.000
a new car costs about 5 million and keeping it over 5-6 years including depreciation, shaken and insurance plus maintenance costs 50.000 per month
at a university you would be getting about 4 months holiday, if you want to travel each holiday it would cost about 1 million in total |
