| The students are adult immigrants from different countries and cultures. They are enrolled in general education programs at the college, but I don't think most of them will continue with the college track. They need English for jobs and daily life. |

The majority of students are from Iraq, but there are some from Sudan, Nepal, Afghanistan, Burma, Burundi, Ethiopia, Mexico. |

Similar programs in the US are referred to as community ESL programs. Another thing to keep in mind is that many immigrants enroll in these types of classes because they intend to take the US naturalization test. If that's the case with your students, then you'll want to ensure the content---textbooks and/or supplemental material---is heavy on American culture/context. Again, supplemental materials will offer more flexibility than complete reliance on a textbook. |

| Cutting Edge/Headway and the ilk would give you some structure to work around but I agree with NS, newspapers, magazines, video clips would liven up the classes and are authentic to daily life. |
