Brace yourselves for a shock: Inside Higher Education posted the no. of openings for faculty and administrative jobs. This is across the USA, both teaching and non-teaching positions. Despite the fact that teachers are the largest payroll cost of a university, the number of admin jobs is way beyond the no. of faculty jobs.
Admin: 6323. . . . . . . . .Faculty: 4649 But this is what administrators wanted all the time. Workers who are more concerned about keeping their jobs let the elites have their way.
Is there any doubt that American higher ed. is now a gulag?

Not really that surprised. "Administrative jobs" includes all kinds of administrative assistants (i.e., secretaries) and other office staff, as well as deans, provosts, vice presidents, etc.
Also, university faculty tend to stay in positions for the long-term, whereas office admin staff might come and go more often, which would lead to more openings posted. |

If you are serious, you simply can't leap to conclusions about a "gulag" without doing something even vaguely looking like analysis. Note that some of your flaws have already been pointed out by rtm.
If you choose to pursue this topic, you should do a proper evaluation and interpretation in order to be fair to all sides. |

Why should I do an analysis? The numbers speak for themselves if you remember that we are in a depression. Secretaries and assistants are not seeking better opportunities in significant numbers.
But why don't you give us your anecdotal report on how things are going great for you? You must have tenure and that corner office by now.  |

Interesting. That has not been my observation at the multiple universities I've worked at in North America.

Compared to most other humanities and social science fields, ESL/TESOL has actually been doing quite well in terms of job opportunities in higher ed. |
