I'm 35, with 15 grand earned in the middle east (not from teaching English). I want to change paths work-wise. I want to teach English, because I love doing it, but obviously I'm not sure about the long-term prospects.
My current line of work is drying up. Let's assume for a moment that's it's going to disappear completely (which probably isn't far from the truth anyway).
I don't want to move back in with the parents!
Should I put this money into education? A DELTA then Masters (is this possible without a Bachelors degree?), or something else?
What about putting it into vocational training?
What would you do? Or rather, what do you think I should do? |

What do you want to do when you get all "growed-up" ?
IF you want to be a teacher then go back and get a B.Ed.
It opens up a LOT more doors than a DELTA (inside and outside of a classroom).

I'm not sure 15k is enough for a BEd.
But you have made me think - maybe there are bursaries available for these 'on the job' Beds. I'll check it out. |

Get a BA; you'll need one anyway to legally work in most countries. |

True dat. (BA., B.Sc. or B.Ed is up to you there OP.)
Education to a 1st degree level is commonly a visa requirement.
It certainly is or will be in ALL of east Asia (ASEAN block +6) by 2015 for (legal) work in EFL.

What currency is the money? GBP? USD?
Tuition fees are now 9k per year for home students in the UK (though you may not be classed as a home student now). So you're still looking at an extra of 17k just for the tuition - then there's accommodation, food, etc.
Do you have a bachelor's degree? |

It's £15,000, as stated in the title.
No bachelor's degree.
In response to someone else, saving it is an option, but the point of this post is how to SPEND it on education OR training in order to change career paths.
Many folk here are touting the Bachelors, which is fair, but I think most folk here are recommending the Bachelors with the aim of using it to work in TEFL. However, bear in mind that I'm not NECESSARILY looking to teach English long-term, so all options are on the table.
15k isn't enough to cover tuition fees as a home student (I think these fees are ASTRONOMICAL btw!), but it's just about enough to cover Open University tuition fees (they're about 5.5k per year). |

My reading skills aren't what they used to be...
What are your concerns about the long-term aspects of this. You said you loved teaching, do you worry it may be a passing phase? Or do you think the bottom may fall out of the market?
It is possible to get on MAs without a first degree, though you have to show your potential elsewhere e.g. work experience. |

I think my only concern is that working towards, and reaching, a position in the TEFL job market where I can make decent money, means I would only be able to make good money abroad, rather than in the UK.
Ultimately, I would like the option of living and working in the UK making AT LEAST 28k a year (gross). |

A memorable quote from the late George Best:
I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered. |
