A memorable quote from the late George Best:
I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered. |
The late, great George Best!
It's amazing that despite the lifestyle that he led he was an incredible player on the pitch.
Boom! From the Wikky-peed-ia: "Belfast City Airport was renamed the George Best Belfast City Airport." Gettin' an airport named after you--isn't that a sign that you've "made it"?
R.I.P. George Best--you were the original celebrity footballer.

I saw him do an after-dinner speech once at a sportsmans charity dinner. He told this story: George Best tells the story of the night his date was Miss World, the evening had been spent in the casino where his numbers had come up consistently. Eventually he retired to the hotel bedroom and ordered champagne. The waiter brought the champagne into a room in which George stood by a scantily clad Miss World while the bed was piled high with £20 notes.
As he uncorked the bottle the waiter said, “Mr Best, I have always wanted to ask you a question. Where did it all go wrong?”

Chris, the problem with having an airport named after you is that you're not around to appreciate the honour. Witness JFK, John Lennon and Charles de Gaulle. |

No bachelor's degree.
Many folk here are touting the Bachelors, which is fair, but I think most folk here are recommending the Bachelors with the aim of using it to work in TEFL. However, bear in mind that I'm not NECESSARILY looking to teach English long-term, so all options are on the table.
15k isn't enough to cover tuition fees as a home student (I think these fees are ASTRONOMICAL btw!), but it's just about enough to cover Open University tuition fees (they're about 5.5k per year). |
If you plan to stay white collar then education to a 1st degree is pretty much the entry level (regardless of the profession you think you want to get into).
If you aptitude is more blue collar then go vocational and do what works for you.
As I said in my first post... what does ya'll wanta be when ya gets all growed up?
Decide what you want to do then make a plan to get there.
Getting ejumacated with no goal in mind makes for a professional student ... yer always returning for more ejumacatin .....
(not that there is anything wrong with spending your life as a student - makes for a nice wall full of wallpaper - makes great conversation starter).

I like that story M.G.
Indeed, when it comes to George Best, the question is "where did it all go wrong?"
He quit Man U. at age 27--was that that point in which it all changed...or was it much sooner?

Indeed.
...Ronald Reagan, John Wayne, Gnassingbé Eyadéma (I've been to "his" airport)...

I often wonder whether growing up in Belfast at that time had an effect. Best and Alex Higgins had simiar characteristics. |

I wondered about "the Belfast effect" as well...
...and then I wondered about the effect of his mother also dying because of alcoholism when George was around 32 years of age.

M.G., thanks for bringing the name Alex Higgins to my attention. Just read up about him on the Wikky-peed-ia. Helluva story.

I'm 35, with 15 grand earned in the middle east (not from teaching English). I want to change paths work-wise. I want to teach English, because I love doing it, but obviously I'm not sure about the long-term prospects.
My current line of work is drying up. |
Have you considered washing up instead then? |

| Down payment on a bank loan for rental property. Buy property in an area that promises to appreciate. Let the renter make your payments for you while you gain equity and appreciate in value over the years. In a matter of a couple decades you can turn that 15K into hundreds of K. |
