Hello,

I have a job offer at a university in Hubei Province (80km from Wuhan). The contract mentions 6000rmb ("before tax"). I am puzzled by the "before tax" being mentioned, as I would like to know what the salary is after tax.

By the way my qualifications include a B.A., B.Ed., M.A. and university T.E.S.L Certificate. I am a certified teacher in Canada (McGill University and the University of Windsor).

The tax formula is stepped , so it's not an instant calculation, but on 6000 RMB, it won't be much more than 300 RMB .........- still , why not try to negotiate for 6000 RMB per month after tax? Then , if you stay a few years and you get salary increments , you don't need to worry about steeper tax deductions.

The income tax on 6000 RMB is 36 RMB. There may or may not be a "social welfare" tax depending on if your city/school collects it. See other threads here on that topic.

With your credentials you should be earning much more than this. Keep looking. I only have a BS in teaching with five years experience in China and I make a little more than this. Do you have any experience in China?

Ghost seems to have extensive experience in the ESL field, so I suspect his or her main motive for coming to China is less about money and more about other things. I also earn more than 6000 but getting better jobs from abroad isn't always easy. Being on the ground looking usually yields better results.

Yes, I have experience, and I have been teaching in Saudi Arabia where my salary would be equal to 25,000 RMB, but Saudi presents its own challenges, and as I have been teaching in Saudi for over 6 years, I am looking to branch out. One other motivation is the study of Mandarin, which I did for one year in Taiwan (Taichung) in 2005-2006, while teaching at various schools there during that time. Incidentally - why are the salaries so much higher in Taiwan (where I was making over $2500 basic per month)? Is the standard of living that much higher in Taiwan compared with China?

One other question is vacations. What are the normal vacations in Chinese universities? In the contract this university has the following - 1 week in October, 3-4 weeks in February, and around 2 months in summer. Are those standard vacation times in China?

Thank you, and finally, with regard to signed contracts, I assume the ministry tightly regulates where foreign experts sign their contracts, and don't allow a teacher to sign another contract were the first contract to be undesirable.
