Half the time it's her brother or boyfriend and sometimes you get hands put on you but damn it, you'll find the maiden who really is in distress and show her what a gentleman you are some day! |
What are you going on about? Are you sure China is the right place for you? It's not the best country to come to if you have a mental illness. |

| Apparently it's a great country for people who don't understand sarcasm though. |

| The comment about mental illness, and other such claptrap, goes a long way to explaining why most people don't stick around this forum too long. |

Three and a half months in advance and the OP wants to cancel? Why not? If he's going to cancel, now is the time to do it. It doesn't matter what the reason is at this point. If he wants out of the agreement, he should get out now before the school is REALLY in a pickle.
True, it's expensive for the school to process the letter of invitation, but it hasn't moved on anything yet. The school may have other spots to fill and won't be processing those requests for letters of invitation for another two months.
If he's going to bail, he should do it NOW. |

the problem here, bud, was that OP was planning to sign a contract as
insurance, hoping a better contract would come along. only when the
new, better-paying contract was signed, OP would then notify the first
employer to cancel.
OP was going to sign the first contract with NO intention of fulfilling it.
that would be wrong, m'kay.
moreover, OP was not aware of the costs incurred by the employer in
procuring the necessary visa paperwork. |

That's not what I got out of the original post.
My opinion remains that if he's going to bail, he should do it NOW. I am not making a moral judgment. |

I judge. If you think there is something better out there then don't sign the contract. I myself hire teachers and it's not just the payments the school puts out, think of time that they put in for everything else. Now they need to do everything over because you agreed to the contract.
I am tired of posters coming on this board saying "I'm doing something shady but don't judge me...."
In answer to your question, probably you will have no problems |

BUT THREE AND A HALF MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
Granted, it's not a nice thing to do, but if the school used a recruiter, the time and energy spent in the decision-making process is minimal. If the OP walked in, we're talking about PERHAPS an hour if he has all of his paperwork with him. If it were June, I'd ride a high horse and tell him to stick it out, which is what he should do in that case.
Better now than at the last minute.
To the OP: now you know how others feel about FTs who back out of an agreement. It IS a bad thing. Waiting until a week before school starts is even worse. |

There is sarcasm and there is loony talk. What does a guy ultra-white knighting girls have to do with someone not wanting to sign contracts willy-nilly without the intention of honoring them? |

| Maybe you should think about the person who would have REALLY liked the job but was beaten to it by you? |

I like the fact that the 'white knighting' term is becoming a well-known meme. It makes it so much easier to shame the ones who engage in it.
Maybe I should have worded my first post better. My previous experience has been working in Korea. In Korea, there is no invitation letter or Visa paperwork sent to you by the school, everything is done by you to obtain the visa. It costs very little for the school, and if you reneged on your contract beforehand (although I've never done it), the school will not have much trouble finding somebody else on short notice if they're offering any halfway decent conditions.
I wanted to see if it was a bigger deal in China than it was in Korea. Now that I see that it is a big deal, I won't do it. I told the recruiter that I was not interested in the contract. I'll go to the interview on Tuesday and if that fails, I'll apply directly to more schools. |
