Has anyone been required to take this "evaluation" prior to being issued a visa? Granted, it's been awhile since last teaching in China, but I certainly don't remember all these hoops!
The school that hired me told me this is a requirement for Jiangsu Province and is requesting that I complete it. Anyone know if this is indeed a requirement for a teaching visa? (Are there various levels of visa, where this might be required for some but not others?)
And to top it off, it's a timed test. And if you go over their time limit, it locks you out of the system for 3 months. WHAT?
Input appreciated! |

Pretty sure that was the site I was told to complete during my second year in China.
It's a load of tosh if you ask me, asks you all sorts of questions from what you would do on a rainy day to ancient Chinese novels. |

| I'm not up on "ancient Chinese novels," but I am a master at filling rainy days. Is there a chance I might not pass?! |

Well the questions are ... probably not what you're used to but I'm pretty sure I bombed it and I'm here. |

| Any idea how long the time limit is? Will it take an hour, or can it be done in less time? |

Ok, I created a fake profile and it was the site I was thinking of.
There are 4 basic sections:
1) Background - basically your average CV - qualifications, work experience, etc.
2) Behaviour style test - Trying to weed out the psychopaths?
3) Knowledge test - A few teaching questions thrown in amongst the strangest general knowledge quiz.
4) Writing test - to test your ability to write.
Behavioural Style Test
180 questions asking you to rate yourself on a scale of 1 - 5.
Highlights include:
3. Radiate joy.
5. Would never cheat on my taxes.
47. Pay my bills on time.
61. Have a sharp tongue.
71. Go on binges.
179. Never splurge.
Knowledge Test
40 multiple choice questions.
Highlights include:
Which one of these is the most typical way a young Chinese person would learn to play a musical instrument?
[A] He/she would be given an instrument and be encouraged to play with it.
[ B ] He/she would be required to master mechanical exercises, like scales, and gradually develop skills tested in standardized music exams.
[C] He/she would attend many concerts and be given a great amount of time to decide which instrument to play.
[D] He/she would be given the same instrument played by the mother's friends' children, so that parents could compare their performance on the same instrument.
Which one of these is NOT a violation of road safety and traffic regulations in China?
[A] Motor vehicles and pedestrians occupying the right-hand side of the road
[ B ] Driving after drinking
[C] Operating motor vehicles without registration
[D] Obtaining a driver's license without training
Which one of these is NOT a reason why Chinese students in particular would choose seats in the front of their classroom?
[A] They would like to be able to easily read words on the chalkboard.
[ B ] They would like to have their spontaneous and individual questions acknowledged more readily.
[C] They are genuinely interested in the material and would like to get as much out of the course as possible.
[D] They might habitually sit there, having been assigned to the front of the room by other teachers of their other classes.
Writing Test
Unfortunately I closed the window of the writing test before I could copy the question. Basically it was along the lines of:
Many people move away to study at college and start a bright new life, whereas some people stay at home and build strong foundations.
Discuss your thoughts on this. |

My first thought was, they lifted that from a TOEFL Speaking task 2. |

I used to work with a guy that created a fake profile and then used his phone to take photos of all the questions.
He then created a true profile and scored a 95%.
He told me that the writing test changed questions, but he was allowed plenty of time to think of a good answer.
I did the physical exam here in Fujian last week, and one of the tests was a multiple choice "crazy test". I was seated at a computer and asked to answer 50 questions about habits, suicide, voices in my head, etc.
It was easy to guess the "correct answer", and I passed ! |
