Hi everyone,

I'm writing my Master's thesis about private market English schools, AKA eikaiwa, right now for the U of Leicester. Eikaiwa, as I'm sure you'll all agree, is a huge phenomenon but is mostly invisible in English teaching literature. The survey has 23 multiple choice questions and should take about 5 minutes, and can be completed in either English or Japanese.

Also, although I am an eikaiwa teacher as well, I am specifically avoiding surveying schools in my area (eastern Shizuoka Prefecture) and will absolutely not use the data gathered here for any commercial purpose.

Thanks for reading!

I don't understand this question from the questionnaire:

I often recast or restate problematic student comments for clarification.

Basically, this means repeating a student's statement, phrased more clearly, to see if you understood the intended meaning. At least this was the meaning I took from it.

Maitoshi is right. Sorry if the phrasing was weird.

This is why you should always, always run a pilot questionnaire first, to iron out problems like this. Rolling Eyes Anyway, good luck, and I hope you get some good results out of this.

It was pilot tested but this particular issue wasn't raised. I suppose "recast" is a bit of a technical term, but I couldn't think of an efficient way to phrase it without using that word, so there you go.

My trouble was with the words "problematic" and "comment". To me, comment is more likely to mean "comment on the quality of my teaching" than "anything that comes out of a student's mouth during a lesson". And "problematic" suggests that the student is being troublesome in some way, rather than just making normal learner errors. If you'd used just one of these "problematic" words, I'd have inferred the meaning from context, but putting them both together created too much ambiguity for me.

Ah, I see. Now that you mention it I can see that interpretation as well. Thanks for the feedback.
