It seems that the jobs posted on this site state 40 hour working weeks. I'm trying to imagine what 25 hours teaching and 15 hours prep is like. Can anyone relate a story about that experience if you've had it.
I'm especially interested in the stress of dealing with the students and the administrators. It seems like a lot of teaching and office hours. |

It's simply that: teaching 5 hours a day and using the rest of the time for office hours, lesson planning, meetings, committee work, etc. It's considered working a full-time job. Fairly basic for those teaching at universities, vocational schools, military contracts, and so on. What have the teaching hours been at the places where you've taught? What's it like where you currently teach?

This is universal. Many teaching situations worldwide entail working 35-40 hours a week. Hasn't that been your experience? If not, then it's an adjustment you'll need to make wherever in the world you decide to apply for work. |

This question you pose raises even more questions...have you ever held a regular teaching job? Ever?
Have you ever looked at the job adverts? There you will find what is expected in terms of working hours.
As Nomad Soul stated your time is spent teaching, office hours, lesson planning, committee work, research, etc.
You want anecdotes and stories? Most days are fairly routine, if you have ever taught or held a full time job then you should have a good idea of what a regular / typical work day is like. Like every new job, it takes time to get used to the way things are done, but eventually you fall into a routine. If you are organized, punctual, conscientious, you should be able to adjust and get on with it. Stress level is also connected to your ability to manage yourself professionally as well as personally. Sorry no stories or anecdotes...  |

Although all my contracts in KSA have indicated 40 hours, there was only one of that required teachers to actually be on the worksite for so long. Now I start at 7 and finish at exactly 12. Teaching time is about 3 hours per day. My present job is with a military contractor.
In many universities and elsewhere in KSA there's a factory mentality, where administration expects the full 40 hours be spent on-site. This is largely because time is the only indicator they know how to read with any accuracy. |

No one takes work home at my job, and no one stays there for more than 5 hours, but I'm not teaching university any longer either. |
