Hi,

Sorry if there is already a topic covering this - I searched and couldn't find anything.

Could anyone tell me the best/cheapest way to get health checks for visas from the UK? I've been offered a TEFL position in China but the form for the health examination asks for things like a chest x-ray and ECG. I figure the NHS surely won't do those for free as part of a general health exam.

I really couldn't afford to be paying out hundreds for a health check - does anyone from the UK have any experience of getting a health exam and can give me any information about the best/cheapest way to get it done? Is there a good option for getting a health exam in the UK?

Any help or information would be much appreciated.

Ok, my experience.

2 years ago I was getting ready to go to China for the first time. I started getting injections at my local NHS travel clinic. The application process for my job began and I was sent the health check. I took it to my local doctor's who said they couldn't do the things required. I got some of my blood tests done at another hospital who offered them in the GUM department (free).

I took the health check form to the NHS travel clinic to show them, they'd never seen anything like it before. Anyway, long story short they called a GP who looked at the form and began laughing. Told me that he was a 'lefty' and believed the NHS should be for everyone, not just the rich - asked me to write a £25 cheque to the hospital and then gave me a lot of forms. He then told me to 'look ill and upset, it would help if you cough a bit' wrote some notes on the forms and told me to go and get my ECG and chest x-ray! Great guy.

I've heard that only the blood tests are needed. If you go to the China boards there's a sticky for the medical check - may be worth posting there.

I'm due to return to China this autumn, the job I'm lined-up for a health check, they suggested my original one may work and I'm due to find out sometime soon...fingers crossed the local government accepts it!

The Chinese embassies ususally have a list of physicians/hospitals (in their coverage area) that can do the medical for you.

They usually run about 100-150 quid (depending on the country you are getting it done in - other than the USA (where they are brutally more expensive)).

You could fiddle-fart around and probably save a few quid but it will take that much extra time running hither, thither and yon and cost you in shoe leather (and transportation costs).
