I am a primary teacher aged 55 considering a CELTA course and want to know how easy it will be to find TEFL work with these qualifications at my age.

Is your motivation in changing careers to TEFL due to an interest in simply teaching abroad or are you just looking to do something different? I ask because you could find work overseas as an experienced, licensed primary teacher in international schools. However, by changing to TEFL, you'll be starting in an entry-level situation.
That said, are salary and benefits an issue and are there countries/regions you absolutely don't want to live/work in (excluding those on a no-travel list)? Lastly, what's your nationality? |

Thank you for such a quick reply.
I am looking for a career change. I haven't taught in schools for 7 years as I have been running my own Bed and Breakfast business, which I have just sold. I would like to travel and find some worthwhile work that combines my teaching experience with that in the hospitality business.
I do need to earn something but not a huge salary.
I am British so English is my first language. I don't speak any other languages unfortunately but there is nowhere I would not be prepared to teach (other than those listed on the FCO site). I do like the idea of travelling more in Asia and South America.
I hadn't thought of teaching international schools but it is something I would consider.

| Why not contact some of the big hotel chains and see if they need tefl teachers in their overseas locations? |

Skip the CELTA (focused on adults).
Get a generic TEFL (or just read up on it) since you are already a well experienced teacher.
Even at 55 (I am 56) there is more than ample work in Asia.
International schools usually have a better remuneration package (air, housing, medical, etc).

However, if you're itching to teach adults, consider taking the CELTA/equivalent TEFL cert. course in a city in your target country that has plenty of resorts and hotels. Then focus on getting an entry-level TEFL job in one of the language schools that also offers business English or English for customer service to the local businesses. Otherwise, if such classes are not already offered at the school you end up teaching in, once you feel settled in, approach the nearby hotels/resorts or your employer about teaching short or part-time classes. Anyway, for now, start with an Internet search on teach hotel english jobs. |
