He contacted me after I sent him an email. The thing is I found another job within a few days somewhere else before he even had time to really attempt to help me out.

That's all I can share. Sorry, it's not more than this.

Note the mention that 90% of Chinese recruiters are BS.

There are so many jobs in China, there is rarely a reason to play the odds and risk the well documented traps and abuses which constantly occur.

I will just say Cheung would not be used by someone on the mainland. That is a different system, maybe someone in Guangdong, but then it is still maybe.

That post from eslteachersboard doesn't even make sense to me. I used to glance through that site now and again but pretty much every thread gets hijacked by two or three of the louder posters on there. Gets my vote for worst discussion board going.

I dislike ESLTeachers. However, if Jimmy Cheung is Frank Zhang,

RUN!

The guy is an arm twister (that's putting it nicely) and has been around for a long time.

Be proactive and subscribe to something like esljobs.com (it may have changed its name recently) and view the job descriptions. THEN apply.

An alternative would be to put your resume up on TeachChina or abroadchina.org. Recruiters must pay to see your resume. That job hunting scenario is much less likely to attract vultures like FZ.

As soon as I saw "Jim Cheung" I thought of Frankie Boy. He is the epitome of everything that is wrong with the unregulated recruiting industry, and he is what makes many people vehemently opposed to ever using a recruiter.

I got my current job through him, and even got a better contract than the other teachers. I didn't really have any problems with him but he seems like a fruitcake.
He sends emails from 3 different addresses at random and often at weird hours. It usually takes a number of emails for him to answer my questions and he is slow to reply. One of the last emails he sent was an amusingly fake letter from a "teacher" saying how good he is at being a recruiter.
I guess he can get the job done, but I can't be bothered dealing with his nonsense anymore.

He must have developed some social skills.
