Regardless of what your chosen school calls its terminal degree, you'll have to produce a dissertation. Is it possible that you haven't read the curriculum requirements? The pursuit of the terminal degree is demanding, regardless of the discipline. This is what my posts are about.


I think you may have difficulty with your plan, whether you study for a Ph.D in Music or English or a Ph.D/DMA in Music. The Ph.D and the DMA are often interchangeable terms.

I think you need to do more homework. You say that you've been given a full ride at a prestigious university. I'd hate to see you fail after all the hard work you've already put in to get this far in your studies.

I appreciate the concern, but your citations are apples and oranges, so I will explain.
But it may be not of interest for anyone - so others can stop reading here:)


The Yale University citation you took from the (typical) AUDITION requirements - (I also had to do the scholarly written paper for my application)

South Carolina - (again typical) "2 credits for a document" - compare it to the usual high number of PhD dissertation credits - and you see the big difference between a DMA and a PhD. Not that a DMA is easier, but the focus is just distributed differently, mainly in lectures and recitals, which are hard work preparing for, but as a visiting scholar in China I will do exactly lectures and recitals anyway.

In short, I know what to expect. I also know that for the next 2 or 3 summers I can leave (US) campus to do my study/research/practice in any country - ideally in the aforementioned Chinese Uni of mine, earning some cash (even with a full scholarship the cash always helps)

Look on the bright side, yours is a "luxury problem". The institution in Changsha wants to keep you on and that will be a nice professional partnership for you in the future. The love will be continued to be felt as you visit Changsha on a yearly basis conducting workshops and seminars for the students and faculty in Changsha. You will give them massive face in doing so and the love will continue to be returned in buckets. Win-win!

I think about the same, periodically returning to my university in Sichuan and conducting lectures and workshops for the students and teachers here. Professional partnerships...always a good thing and a very special thing.
