Hi all,

Very much enjoyed about 6 yrs in Japan (Hokkaido) & never thougth would think to come back except visit.....but job market for me suddenly tight. Mostly applying in Middle East but ay fall back to Japan.

So... any age considered too old ? No gray hair yet , etc Laughing but know they will ask. Is it a big thing if NOT Picky where I go
(my nihongo still v. good to survive & have friends). Would hope to find work in next 4 months ....

Also , have SALARIES dropped in past 7 /8 years ?? I mean the recession not better , so it could happen ??

Thanks (from Alan-Booth/ Kurosawa-Fanboy " ) , Jay

I have dealt with age discrimination already and I am over 40.

What are you looking for?
Things are getting worse. Dispatch work is growing. Schools sometimes just pay by the hour. Tokyo is flooded with teachers.
It is hard to get decent work. You have to be very flexible.

Seems like it is time to get out, but if you are single, that could be different.
Then you can live where you want and choose the best job for you.

What were you on before? ALT jobs are 230,000 a month plus unpaid holiday time now, eikawas seem to be lingering around the 250,000 area

Wow, was hoping for a bit of a good news. The West is kinda recovering economically, meaning, maybe less people going abroad to work. Plus the Olympics giving a little pop for English. Those together, I hope we can see wages rise.

thanks for responses. I had 3 part times when i left (few hours ALT at HS) hours at junior college and Eikaiwa kids classes (gave 1 French class at Eikaiwa) Maybe Sapporo more saturated now. remember were always openings in spots like Kitami & Kutchan. Kitami very remote but the 2nd mid-way Sapp and ski areas. At least in Hokkaido , managed to avoid key money & such expenses at times. Imagine they soak u with that in Tokyo ..... LoL, remember when Gaijin HOUSES were many w/ just month to month fees (shared bath of course ...but enjoy Sento more or less if needed) ..hope to avoid sinkin much $$ into move
'll stop b4 I break into Enka or SAS song Laughing Laughing

TEFL is growing in popularity as a career though, I guess the question is will the supply lower enough for there to be a shortage at some point? I could spend a while discussing this but ultimately Id just be speculating. Here's hoping

Don`t know about Hokkaido but the job market has to be tight considering people want to teach in Sapporo.
The only place which seems to be doing well is Nagoya.

A lot of glass is half empty comments here. I think it depends on the OPs certification, degrees, and the kind of work he or she did before.

rxk22,
Could you give a bit more info on your educational background and the kind of jobs you were working before in Japan? We might be able to direct you to better work than the posters are mentioning.

Thanks, I am mostly OK. I am a FT employee for a private school. Decent gig, and I make more than I ever did as an ALT. Plus they pay for my insurance and pension.

I'd only go back to being an ALT if the wife worked again, and I wanted to study for the N1
