Try finding some expat websites for the city you're in. Some of them have places where you can advertise your services. |

My experience is that language schools are the best for 'private' work.
Same location each time.
Get paid even if half the students don't turn up.
Maybe not the high $$ of privates, but not having no shows or late cancellations is worth something in my book. |

If you are the only round eyed person working there, and your area is tough on FTs working outside their contracts, be careful. You may run into Chinese faculty from nearby colleges who consider you their competition. |

Good point.
In my most recent situation the school was owned by a Chinese teacher of English and the only other 'employee' on deck on Saturday mornings was an ABC taking primary age kids.
Her students adored her so she had her own niche. |

If they block 3 or 4 classes together it's nice also since the getting dressed, travel time etc. is the same regardless of how many hours you teach.
For most of my private classes (other than prep time) it's still an hour to shower and supervise while the wife irons my clothes + 30 mins. travel each way etc. A one hour class can end up taking 3~4 hours by the time you factor in the getting readies and preparationment.
WEB is always looking. Base pay sucks - often 100~120/hr, but they guarantee 3 hours minimum at a time with more or less no prep. |

Good points by Listerine.
Commute and prep time must be taken into the cost:benefit equation. |

What are the going rates these days? For P/T at language schools or your own privates?
I didn't think WEB would be as low as 100 RMB/Hr. Wow. |

If you're a good teacher at your school, private tutees will find you. My rate starts at rmb 200 per hour for oral tutoring, depending upon the age and the ability of the student. I'll bump it down to rmb 150 per hour for conversation in groups of three, two hour minimum. (Each student pays 50 rmb). I actually prefer doing group work.
For written tutoring, my fee starts at rmb 250 and goes up depending upon the age of the student and the nature of the writing. I don't like doing one-on-one work (especially writing), so if someone wants my services, he has to pay for them. Until recently, I got a lot of work through the FAO and through Chinese teachers. |
