Hello,

We all hear about how easy it is to find a job in China...especially if you live in Korea like me. Anyway I have been here for a year and a half and I might want to look for a change. My only teaching experience is here, and as I said in the title, I am middle-eastern.

How do the discriminatory hiring practices compare to Korea? presumably they are a little bit less discriminatory because there is greater demand for us.

Also, this kind of calls for it's own topic but I'll try to wedge it here: Any non-white people who have made a long-term career in ESL, please share your experiences, especially if it's in Asia.

It will be more about how good looking you are. Are you Middle Eastern background from US/CAN/UK/AUS/NZ/SA? If so, should be very easy. If your passport is Middle Eastern, then it's going to be a lot harder. Seriously though, with varying degrees of job quality and levels of legality, it seems almost any nationality can still get a job in China. That's as long as you can speak English, of course, and look hard enough. At the school where I taught, there were Nigerians, Ghanians, Russians, Slovakians, Filipino, and then the others from the "big five".

There was only one of each from each of those nationalities represented though, it wasn't as if there were a giant amount. It was a crappy school though, as you can probably imagine. Beware of the tourist or business visa "we'll get you a visa" promise, as it will be BS. If your passport is Middle Eastern, it will be even more unlikely that they'll be able to convert your visa to a Z-Visa. So get them to make you a Z-Visa before you go, or run the gauntlet.

This may be somewhat outdated, as I got my marching orders for having the incorrect visa approximately three years ago. With the new visa rules apparently being enforced since one year ago, it might be more difficult for holders of other passports.

On the assumption you speak Arabic, check out this job:

http://www.eslcafe.com/jobs/china/index.cgi?read=33054

"What we are looking for:
We are seeking qualified and enthusiastic teachers to join our professional and hard working team. Our staff teaches a variety of age groups from 6 years old up to adults and business English classes and we prefer flexible teachers who can teach a range of levels and ages. Teachers must be native speakers of English with a university degree or diploma and/or a TEFL certificate, or the equivalent. Preference will be given to teachers who have experience in teaching kindergarten or business English, although an eagerness to learn and a positive, flexible attitude will also be highly beneficial. Applicants with a first or good second language of French, Russian or Arabic, would also be given priority as we also teach these languages in our school, as well as teachers who may already be in China."

You may, or may not be a native speaker of English. But if you speak Arabic, I'm sure that you can negotiate. You obviously speak English well, so if you have both, you'd probably be a shoe in. However, it will be a very, very cold winter up there.

Good luck

Thanks for the link and the advice, that is quite helpful. It looks like an interesting job...I'm looking to stay maybe another year here in Korea but I may as well try my luck and apply.

I'm Canadian, and grew up there. I can more or less speak Arabic well, maybe even well enough to teach it!

I'm less concerned about visa than to be able to access the best jobs and not be pushed aside for someone of a more favourable complexion. I am very handsome if what Koreans tell me is true.

I did apply to that job linked, and I skyped with them. They wouldn't go over 5500 rmb, so I'll probably pass on it because that is peanuts in Korea...But I'll look at the contract in case. Also the shared kitchen is a bit of a deal breaker. As much as I like to eat out, it's nice to have the option of cooking and having the space to cook.

Although you are definitely right that the school appreciates people of colour, the interviewer didn't ask me about my ethnic background until I mentioned it.

5500 is about right for a bog standard China FT job.
FTs come to China for reasons unrelated to the monthly cheque.
The most important of these is the low barriers to entry. It's getting harder but relatively it's the easiest to crack.

Why not seek work in the Middle East? The pay is good, and you can enjoy the additional luxury of blending into the crowd.

I did apply to a couple in the middle east, but it seems like jobs there are a little more demanding, most of them ask for a TESL and 2-3 years experience and I only have an online TESL and 1 year with Elementary kids. I think I've heard wall street english mentioned for taking entry level teachers, and I did send a resume to them a few days back.

Unless you have significant debts (school loans or whatever that you're trying to pay off back home) don't get too hung up on this. Between the significantly lower cost of living in China compared with Korea, and the fact the average uni job in the PRC will see you having to pay no bills (electricity, internet, tax, water, gas, health insurance etc.) often your only real expense in China will be food - which usually can be bought with the small change behind the cushions on your sofa. Many schools will even give you a monthly "canteen allowance" (500rmb at mine), so even your food expenses are fairly minimal.

Factoring cost of living and reduced expenses I once worked out that a 5,500rmb salary in China was about comparable with a 1.6~1.7 million won a month job in Korea. And you're teaching half the hours of a standard 2.1mil gig in Korea. Pick up a couple of hours privates a week in China and you're fast saving more $ in the PRC....and not having to deal with Koreans.

I wouldn't do the shared kitchen thing though - there's always a dirty pig.

I didn't have time to look it over but just some things that stick out for me:

It's 10 months, meaning that they won't pay for the summer holidays.

Also they mention weekend teaching, I don't think I'm OK with that.

I'm guessing the probation period is a normal thing in China.

It doesn't say what level is taught, and they mentioned they have a kindergarten too...well it would be a huge waste of time to find out that it's a bait and switch kindergarten job being advertised as a university job.

Also they didn't say which campus. Anything else I should tell them about?

Contracts normally go from 1 Sept to mid Jul or thereabouts. You don't get paid for the summer because you're not employed there any longer. If however you sign for another year then a lot of schools will pay you, either at full or half rate, for the summer. If there's anything in a contract you don't like feel free to negotiate, sometimes they'll agree to amendments.

Most of the questions you posted are best answered by talking to someone who already works there. They're on the ground and will know.

I emailed with some of my concerns anf this is the response i got

Quote:
The contract is for every teacher so you will find it is not specific.

Anyway, here is the answer: 1. Nowhere in the contract says that I will teach adults: You will not teach kids. 2. It says that I may teach at other schools. Again we never talked about this during the interview, but it would have been helpful to mention if this is expected of all teachers. It is not another school, it is different colleague/campus, and it is for all the teachers since we do not know the teaching schedule for now. it happens some classes are at one campus and the other is on another campus. 3. No weekends: Weekends are there. 4. Be fined up to 10 times the monthly salary in case of early termination. Who would agree to this? This seems unreasonable. This is the standard statement from national expert bureau, we just follow it, so far we have not really met the cases, but it is good to mention and we shall let the officers know it is not reasonable. 5. Shared kitchen is not very good. If you are happy to live on new campus, you will have your ownl kithchen.

--------------------------------

Sorry the formating isnt good cause im on mobile. The first part is my concern and the second part is her answer. Eg 1.The pay is low. The pay will be raised means that I sent her that the pay was low and she said it will be raised.

If she rewrites the contract to amend those things iMight accept it. But point 4 is very worrying so i need some advice.
